Commercial Description:
An English style special amber ale. This ale's full body imparts a distinctive malty, robust palate and fruity bouquet. Brewed from pale malted barley, Munich, crystal, carastan and a touch of chocolate malts, Pacific Northwest hops, water and ale yeast.

Editor's Note: It is unknown at present exactly where each of the Spanish Peaks beers are being brewed. Flying Dog no longer makes any of them. Some are brewed by City Brewery in LaCrosse, WI. Expect this beer entry to move as more recent info becomes available.

12 oz bottle, cryptic date code, 070a07. Lable looks like it was put on by hand.

Clear amber with lots of carbonation and a thin tanish head.

Aroma is mostly nutty with a little caramel.

Flavor is light burnt sugar with a light earthy citrusy bitterness.

Body is light and finish is short..

Gotta say this is better than most American pales....not saying a lot, this I know. Copper pour that has a small head, very little lacing. Nutty malts with a weird finish....alcohol isn’t hidden very well. I would pass if I were offered this again.

This pours a deep amber into the glass, with a tiny head that has no real retention and leaves small lace. The nose initially has some strawberries, earthen hops, trace corn and possibly some nut combinations. The flavor begins the descent, unfortunately. This is very thin-bodied, leaving the malt barren and very lackluster. The finish is bitter, long, and bordering on acrid at times. It almost has a hue of salt to it that is a bit uncomfortable. Overall, very unimpressed. I was hoping for a bit more.... seems very unilateral and one-dimensional.

Clear copper, with a thin but persistent head. Heavy malt aroma, with a bit of a sour hop note. Heavy and oily, with a sweet, somewhat tart hop finish.

Bottle Dark amber pour with very nice head, little retention, good lacing. Aroma of some malt, light hop, but mainly citrus. Slight citrus flavor, some sweetness, malt+caramel, earthy hops. Spice in the begining of the aftertaste followed by citrus hops. Smooth and drinkable. Not that its unbalanced, but theres something weird about it, a very interesting blend of ingredients. I’ll give it some extra points for originality.

Pours well with a dark amber color and a fluffy white head. Aroma is a pretty good mixture of malt and hops, but something is off... not sure what. Taste is the same, but more exaggerated. Something is just plain wrong here, and it gets worse as I try to finish. I think it may be the combination of chocolate malts with the english style ale.... the whole beer seems to be unbalanced. Not so good, I won’t be getting this one again.
