Commercial Description:
An English style special amber ale. This ale's full body imparts a distinctive malty, robust palate and fruity bouquet. Brewed from pale malted barley, Munich, crystal, carastan and a touch of chocolate malts, Pacific Northwest hops, water and ale yeast.

Editor's Note: It is unknown at present exactly where each of the Spanish Peaks beers are being brewed. Flying Dog no longer makes any of them. Some are brewed by City Brewery in LaCrosse, WI. Expect this beer entry to move as more recent info becomes available.

Pours well with a dark amber color and a fluffy white head. Aroma is a pretty good mixture of malt and hops, but something is off... not sure what. Taste is the same, but more exaggerated. Something is just plain wrong here, and it gets worse as I try to finish. I think it may be the combination of chocolate malts with the english style ale.... the whole beer seems to be unbalanced. Not so good, I won’t be getting this one again.

I was hoping with a name like black dog is was going to be roasty, think again. Pours amber with a white head. Fruity caramel sweetness with a lightly citrus hopped finish. A bit of spiciness showed in the finish giving this beer a unique flavor to it.

This beer is really tasty...after a couple of Bridgeport IPAs I was a little disappointed with the flavor, but as I went on it got to be great. Chocalatey and smooth, little carbonation.

Clear amber-red, thin head. Woody, nutty, caramel, marshmallow aroma with some vanilla and orange. Interesting. Fruity, spicy flavor with some toasted malt notes. It almost tastes like it has spices in it. It’s a little watery. Finishes clean with a hint of astringency. Distinct beer.

Pours dark brownish amber with a thin off-white foamy head. Aroma is reminiscient of a Belgian yeast, very fruity and estery with notes of apple, pear, grapes, caramel, toffee, and candy. Taste is sweet and yeasty, cotton candy, alefruits, bubble gummy. This beer tasted more like a Belgian style than a EPA, which is not a bad thing, as I quite enjoyed this beer. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with wispy, light carbonation. Very good beer.

Pours amber honey color w/ a medium sized, semi creamy, spattered froth that recedes to a thin dusty spackle and rings. Aroma is malty w/ grapefruit rind. Medium nectar w/ ample residual effers. Flavors are crisp and citrusy w/ a moderate malt componant and a slight biscuit goins ons. Some cherry essence appear as it warms. Overall: a well balanced amber that rocks. I dig this brew.
