Commercial Description:
An English style special amber ale. This ale's full body imparts a distinctive malty, robust palate and fruity bouquet. Brewed from pale malted barley, Munich, crystal, carastan and a touch of chocolate malts, Pacific Northwest hops, water and ale yeast.

Editor's Note: It is unknown at present exactly where each of the Spanish Peaks beers are being brewed. Flying Dog no longer makes any of them. Some are brewed by City Brewery in LaCrosse, WI. Expect this beer entry to move as more recent info becomes available.

bottle pours a light brown with a creamy head that fades quickly. orange notes in the aroma with a malty grain smell. malty raw grain taste that has some tannin flavor. burnt flavor on the finish. but on the plus side this has a nice creamy mouthfeel that is enjoyable. a bit too sweet.

(Bottle) Pours a copper body and a nice white lacing on the glass. Lightly carbonated. Mild malt and decent hops in the nose. This transpires into the flavours though there is a mild bandaid in the finish. Good.

This pours a beautiful deep amber with a chunky off white head. Malt is the basis of the aroma for this one. The flavor is lightly malty with some balance coming from the hops, but no real bitterness. Nice smooth finish. A drinkable brew although somewhat ordinary.

2004 draught @ Redbones. Appears a bright orange, moderately hazy with a small white head. Aroma of light grassy hops, some light herbal and floral notes with maybe a touch of yeast and cookie dough. Flavor starts out very appley though? Hmm, this tastes a lot like apples, must be all of the pale and crystal malts. It dosent taste bad, just no real sweetness, nor much bitterness. Finishes dry and very nutty. Light body, moderately carbonated.

Poured a medium amber color with a large off white head. Malty and caramel aroma and tastes. Little nutty as well. Not a bad beer but nothing special either.

This one has a little bit of bittersweetness attached to it. I had this one the day my black lab, Rufus, died. A black dog ale for a black dog. RIP, Mr. Rufus. Tastes like dirt. Seriously, the after-taste is much akin to earth.

For my first rating on this site, maybe not the best beer to pick. The aroma, like the flavor, is sweet, and a bit nutty. Not a bad beer, by any marks, but just lacking in any interesting complexity. Almost no hop presence, not a whole lot of anything but malt.

Ahhhh… It was just OK!
Poured a dark chestnut colored body and a fluffy tan head. The aroma is lightly nutty, nice touch of assorted toasted barleys. Some woodsy characters, rather natural and earthy with a very light touch of smoke and chocolate.
