Cornfield (4343), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Sep 21, 2008 Picked up a bottle at Pat-apostrophe-s Liquors in Porter, IN. Methinks this should be listed as a plain ole wheat ale since it shares little with a Kristallweizen except for the clarity. This one is a deep gold with a tall and sustained head. The aroma is wheat malt with lemon grass. It tastes of wheat flakes and lemon with a shake of sugar. Okay as a lawn mower beer. kiefdog (476), Tampa, Florida, USA Sep 19, 2008 12oz bottle from Jans Wine and Boos #2 (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark amber color with a very thin, nearly non-existent, white head. Aroma is sweet malt, honey, grass, hay, some light floral and spice notes. Flavor is fairly faint, some almond, vanilla, sweet malt, honey and hay notes. Generally light body with a slightly sweet finish. Ron (749), Rochester, New York, USA Sep 12, 2008 Golden clear hue. Small white head. Light to medium bodied with light fruit and honey flavors. Mild yeast character. Moderate crispness. Would be even more enjoyable on a hot summer day. edden (924), cow- lumbus, Ohio, USA Sep 6, 2008 9/6/08: Golden yellow body with a white head. Mild soapy nose. Flavor is clean with a small hoppiness. Refreshing lawnmower beer. otakuden (117), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Sep 4, 2008 She poured a very malty, almost amber shade into my hefeweizen glass. A huge head brims over the top, but sadly fades into almost nonexistence on the top with a smidgen of a ring around the sides. A faint nose of malts and hops, but unfortunately no real tangible solid aromas I can put a finger on. Definitely no notes of cloves or coriander or bananas. I do detect a faint hint of citrus, but I really have to sniff for it. A steady stream of bubbles rises to the top of my glass as I go for my first quaff. A solid body with only light carbonation which defies the still streaming bubbles. A light sweetness hints of caramel. Along with having a medium body, the mouthfeel is very smooth and soft which could be due to the wheat used to make this kristallweizen. The finish is a bit bitter with some of the citrus I dredged up in the nose making a play for my tastebuds. As she warms a bit more citrus zing comes out to play, crisp grapefruit and lemons. The sweetness fades into the background a bit as the wheat and citrus takes the forefront. During this change, her viscosity diminishes and the body gains a watery feel. Some beers get better as they warm, but Crystal Weiss does not.
Maybe I am partial because I enjoy my hefeweizens so much, but I have had stellar wheat and weiss style beers before. I’ve had some mind-blowing kristallweizens before also. Sadly, Spanish Peaks Crystal Weiss underperforms and disappoints on pretty much all fronts. It’s not horrible, but not something I would seek out and buy.
