Commercial Description:
Summer White is faithful to the Belgian wheat style with its light body, cloudy color and touch of spices. A complex but refreshing ale perfect for summer drinking.

Editor's Note: It is unknown at present exactly where each of the Spanish Peaks beers are being brewed. Flying Dog no longer makes any of them. Some are brewed by City Brewery in LaCrosse, WI. Expect this beer entry to move as more recent info becomes available.

Bottle. Pours a hazy golden body. Lemon grass, wheat with a light citrus note and a clove and grain y finish. Decent.

(bottle). Pours a cloudy yellow color with particles floating. Medium white head which is mostly diminishing. Wheaty aroma. Wheat flavor with light citrus. Avg duration. Thin texture. Soft carbonation. Spare lacing.

To use an semi-old term. This stuff is da bomb. Pours a cloudy yellow with particles in the liquid looking suspended in air. Best part is the great, smooth taste. I was leery of this beer for no reason..turned out to be a super choice.

Bottle. Pours like a wheat that is a little past its prime. Kind of a gush of fizz somewhere in the middle of the pour and then it dies back quickly. I’m a little concerned as I look at the highly carbonated pale liquid, but aromas don’t seem too offensive, so I take a sip. My buddy from Bozeman insists that this was a right of passage when growing up... so how bad can it be, even after the brewery sold out or whatever the deal was? Aromas are fairly nondescript: a little bit of wheat, grass, spice and maybe even citrus. Flavor is about the same. The carbonation is a little obnoxious, but I can’t deduct since it is probably my fault for delaying on a "summer wheat" until the snow flies in November. The flavor doesn’t seem to have deteriorated at all... it’s just not that interesting.

Phenolic wheaty lemon aroma. Thin small head on pale straw colored beer, small dark chunks of yeast floating. Mmmm citrus lemon flavors up front with lingering dry sour (in a good way) phenolic wheat finish. Clove flavors remain in the background and lemon not orange dominates. Nice mouth feel spritzie well carbed, too style. Overall very drinkable, big bonus for all biers in my opinion, balanced but tart. Just what you’re expecting from a Belgian style witbier. Note: This is one of the better bottled witbiers I’ve had. I suspect I got fresh bottles of this, as Hoegardden is a favorite, but it’s really suffering by the time it reaches my supermarket shelf!

Bottle, from total wine. Pours a gold color with a fair head. Pretty average white beer. Aromas of fruit, yeast, biscuit. Flavor is typical of the style and not anytihng amazing. But easy to drink for sure.

More or less true to style, slightly spicier than expected. Metallic notes a bit stronger than desired, taste is a little thin, lame head. Flawed but far from a pour-out, would not recommend.

The Spanish Peaks Summer White is a culinary experiment in brewing, taking on many of the qualities of pub grub rather than the actual pub’s beer. The regular, well bubbled white head takes up a medium volume, with the melted butter golden brown beer sitting peacefully below. Likewise, the aroma effuses with the smell of butter in the pan, along with a pinch of black pepper, a squeeze of lemon juice, the delicious oils of white fish, frying batter and even some friend corn chips. Really, there’s a lot of gustatory flavors present. The taste is, to my delight, a perfect match of the aroma, exhibiting all the tastes of a good buttered up and fried dish. Very French and Southern. The only negative is a very busy palate which blockades rather than assists the flavors. But still, this is a wonderfully different white beer, and one that could be a daily staple for your friend food fanatics.
