| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Aug 31, 2009 Bitter, and like others have stated has a smell like that of a fresh cut lawn... not something I prefer in my beer, and actually tastes like it has grass clippings in it. 17thfloor (1502), Chicago, Illinois, USA

I’m happy with my progression as a rater, I correctly identified this beer as being a Helles without previously knowing. Unfortunately, Spaten is known for being very crisp and clean tasting and this isn’t their finest example of that. Pours a lighter clear straw color with tiny bubbles and medium fine froth on top. Aroma is light, a balance of sweet munich malt, breadiness and grass. Flavor follows, really balanced, nothing really stands out, some brediness, grass, sweet munich, longer grassy doughy aftertaste. Medium/light bodied, classic Spaten, super smooth great carbonation, but not quite as crisp. A passable Helles, not Spaten’s best, but I can see the wider appeal.
