Nose is bananna, caramel, brown sugar, some clove. Great smelling and great looking beer. Taste is ok but lacking some of the characteristics of the better doppels like Aventinus or Celebrator. Strong wheat and clove taste with alot of light caramel and toffee notes. A bit of bananna but its barely noticable. This has a very dry finish, not bitter but it seems to have more of a bitterness than most doppels. Very full palate. Very solid doppel. IlanMan (820), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA

Flavor is filled with more dark fruit, roasted malt, and toffee characters. A slight bit of alcohol in the finish. Good brew. May buy again. leninthedesert (112), Nevada, USA

Malt underlying the sweet and yeasty body, finishes slightly alcohol and actually becomes more like a brandy as it warms. UselessGdTaste (363), Long Beach, California, USA

I think this may be one of the only things really worth drinking there. Hugely raisiny and sweet. Very worth it. I wish I had tried this sooner. mbgrayson (149), Anaconda, Montana, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 11, 2008 Updated: Sep 11, 2009Bottle, not sure how long this has sat around, pours a dark ruby with brown at the edges, has an off-white head that quickly disperses to a ring and thin covering, large aroma of dark malts and some bread, hints of chocolate, some dirt earthiness on the nose? Some malt sweetness but not overly so, same flavors as found in the aroma, dark malt, bread and some chocolate in there, and there is flavor of plum, some malt sweetness but not in over abundance as I find in some Doppelbocks which I find to be too sweet, this is a dryer doppelbock (not as sweet), and I like it, lots of malt flavors seep through, easy to drink, mouth feel is pretty full on the palate, very good Doppelbock and easy to drink, I did not detect the alcohol at all. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 10, 2008 Spaten Optimator pours well, has a lovely head and good aroma. It’s taste is at first very full and satisfying but seems to be missing something as it finishes. It’s better from the keg than the bottle. But I wouldn’t refuse a glass no matter the source. tastybeer (123), Washington DC, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 10, 2008 This beer is rich with roasted malt and licorice flavor. Also, it has good head. A caramel aftertaste lingers. Overall, it is worthwhile.
