| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 8, 2007 damn good dopplebock. Nice and malty, touch of sweetness balanced, caramel and toasty with good hop flavor. Decent carbonation. Ayinger is still my fave, but for 33% less cost, Spaten makes a great substitute, plus it seems to be more available Optigon (562), Bloomington, Indiana, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Aug 8, 2007 Pours dark brown, clear, with a moderate head. Aroma is somewhat roasty and sweet. Flavor is chocolate, caramel, and other "dark brown" flavors with a hop tingle that really sets it off. I’m generally not big on dopplebocks, but this was good. jlruthven (137), Milledgeville, Georgia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 7, 2007 Pleasantly surprised with this, a pretty mass-marketed doppel. Poured deep reddish brown with a nice light brown head that quickly fizzled down to almost nothing. Smells of biscuits, caramel, and apples. Very rich malts in the taste, and the apples come through in force here as well. Smooth palate, pleasant carbonation. BREWMUSKCLES (1083), New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 6, 2007 A WEIRD SORT OF A BREW - SMELLS ALMOST OF BROOMSTRAW - IT IS NOT PARTICULARLY ENTICING - EVEN TO THIS LAGERMONKEY. THE TASTE IS QUITE INTERESTING, ASTRINGENT EARTHY, MILDLY SPICEY WITH A MORE THAN TOUCH OF SPICY GERMAN STYLE HOPS! HOT AS IT IS THIS BEER WENT DOWN WELL. COMPLETELY HIDDEN ALCOHOL. TINGLE IS GOOD ON THE TONGUE AS WELL. I FOUND IT PERFECTLY (MILDLY) SWEET. THIS COULD BE ADDICTING. MY BEST GERMAN SO FAR. COMPLEX IT IS MUCH LIKE A WINTER BREW. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 5, 2007 Rated 8/5/07. Semi-cloudy, dark chestnut body. Large, uniform tan head that recedes to a thin film. Spotty, sudsy lacing. Caramel, toffee, yeast, bread dough, and a hint of spice comprise the nose. The flavor is sweet from the caramel, with a myriad of floral flavors and an ever present yeasty pungency. Little to no hop bitterness. Carbonation is quite apparent on the palate, and it leaves a bit of a tingling sensation in the back of the throat for a few seconds after the swallow. The body is on the light side of medium, with ample sweetness lending to a light syrupy consistency. Quality brew that is just a little to sweet for my taste. BBB63 (4267), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 4, 2007 Bottle and served in my Unibroue tulip: Finally got off my arse and rating a beer I have had numerous times. A deep rich caramel brown hue with a fading beige fluffy head and good lace. The aroma has notes of nougat, marzipan, caramel, toffee, earthy yeast and a hint of alcohol. The taste is pure sweet dark malts, pumpernickel and rye found as an undertone. As expected the bitterness is almost non-existent as it should be. The nice well attenuated dry finish with just a touch of allspice. The mouth feel is lively yet hardly aggressive with the alcohol mostly an afterthought. A classic bier in the old world tradition.
