| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 4, 2009 Tap at Rattle N Hum. The nose is lightly spicy with a lot of heavy/chewy malts. A light rye spiciness that appears over a lean crisp crackery malt base. There is a little bit of earthiness and even a kiss of oak. The finish shows a little bit of grainy/tannic astringency that actually works to enhance the spiciness of the brew. Pretty nice stuff. beerguy101 (3971), Newark, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 20, 2009 Sampled during RBSG 7/10/2009 on tap at the brewery. This porter pours a medium brown color from the tap. Medium sized beige head. Aroma is fruit and sweet. A medium bodied porter. The malts are fruity and sweet, touch of nuttiness. The hops are earthy. The nuttiness is balanced by the rye spiciness. Very smooth taste. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. Roasty flavor with light chocolate and light rum. Big mouthfeel that’s creamy and a bit spritzy. Roast and caramel lingers with chocolate, light barrel notes, and light earthiness. after4ever (2839), Brier, Washington, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 14/20 | Sep 17, 2009 Draft at Brouwer’s. Pours a murky dark brown with a nice dense creamy disc of mousse on the top. Mild brown rye bread nose, a little earthy, and ever so slightly sour. But definitely not all that powerful an aromatic. Creamy medium body, nice grainy quality to it. Nicely understated carb. The flavors here are almost muted, some sour rye, some nice brown rye sandwich bread. It’s a little on the mild side, and I couldn’t tell you what specifically makes it a pleasing beer to drink. It’s kind of a rye answer to a pretty decent brown ale. But I’d definitely order this fairly regularly...and now’s a good time to add that I am a sucker for a well-made rye beer.
