Commercial Description:
The darker side of the weizen style. Chocolate barley gives this German beer a lovely smoothness that puts the "umm in umpapa". Editor's Note: As of 2007, the Dunkleweizen is now using hefeweizen yeast.

An odd mud color, different than anything I’ve seen before. A wonderful slap of the banana/clove from the Hefe yeast. The waitress described it as a mix of the ESB and the hefe, but this was easily better than both of those. Very different and excellent.

Nice and smooth but unmemorable at the same time. I have not tried this one in years, and since they changed the yeast I will try to return and re-rate.

(Draught) Pours a deep mahogany body beneath a thin, dissipated, frothy tan head. Nose of decent banana esters. Good toasted malt flavour with no hop detection. Unfortunately, this is filtered and I don’t know why???? I like to see the wheaty floaties and added body.

Draught sample at brewpub. Light banana clove aroma infused with a malty balsamic tang. Light chocolate, neutral fruit and mild hops. Dark brown-red clear with off-white lacing head. Medium body wtih medium carbonation. Starts with good wheaty malt and a bit of banana and clove. Definite tang to it, balsamic? or something similar. Cherrywood and light tannic notes. Mild chalky bitter finish and tangy sweet after.

Brown with a white head. Aroma is vinegar, light chocolate, raisin. Taste has caramel, and coffee, with dried plums.

Curious molasses-like aroma, sea salt, off fruit, reminds me a bit of Richmond Chinese markets - fig & vinigar in there too. Pours a dark amber with a light creamy head. Dark malt & wheat taste, slightly skunky hops sharp but otherwise pleasant, but soon forgotten aftertaste. Thin body leaves no trace in the mouth, but decent carb - perhaps too much. This beer is interesting but, again, too thin and lacking in wheat character.
