Commercial Description:
Barley Wine Ale is a legendary top-fermented brew with a deep amber/orange color, and intense fruit and malt nose that is laced with alcohol accented by the sweet aromas of Port. This "wine" made with barley is brewed with a French yeast culture, and possesses a complex flavor of rich malt, fruit esters, and sherry-like qualities that is delicately balanced with hops.

This barley wine pours a deep reddish amber color from a 16oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head, good lacing. Aroma is caramel, apples, fruity and sweet. A medium to full bodied barley wine. The malts are fruity and sweet, lots of apples and other fruits. There is a touch of caramel and toffee, but mostly sweetness. The hops are earthy and mild. There are lots of overripe fruit flavors and its kind of sickeningly sweet. Reminds me more of a Madeira Sherry than a beer. The malt sweet needs to be balanced by some hop presence of some additional carbonation or something. Seems a little thin tasting for a barley wine. This one just doesn’t do anything for me, heading for a drainpour. Mouthfeel is thin. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is sweet.

16oz, gold waxed, bottle. 2005 vintage. Poured a deeper amber color with a large sized off white head. Aromas of dark fruits (black cherries, raisins, and plums), caramel, toffee, trace of chocolate, and a little vinous. Tastes of raisins, plums, caramel, toffee, and brown sugar. Definitely malty sweet. Light alcohol in the finish, but overall well hidden.

RBSG 07 An amber pour with light lace and head. A nose of raisins or other dried fruit. A flavor that was just a tad less sweet than I expected from the nose and the abv warms it up nicely. Carbonation is good but it is a tad thin. Solid across the bard not a bad BW but a slight off flavor and a bit ragged around the edges knocked it down a tad for me.

Bottled. An amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of apples, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet malty with a thick note of caramel, as well as a light note of wood, leading to a finish that leaves a slight alcohol burn in the throat. A boring Barley Wine.

(Bottle 47,3 cl) Courtesy of sk8viking. Vintage 2006. Clear, amber golden with a dense, yellowish head. Lightly caramellish nose. Full-bodied and full of sweet caramel with a slightly burned edge. The finish has a vague bitterness. Not really convincing for a Barley Wine. 290607
