Aroma is of roasted barley and burntness. There are also some notes of chocolate in the aroma. Palate is surprisingly smooth yet so full of flavor. Flavors include a perfect roasted character, nice malt bill, notes of chocolate, and hints of caramelized malts towards the finish. This is a very good brew. Would definitely buy again. k4df4l (154), DTown, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | May 14, 2008 Toasted grain and candi sugar aroma. Pours black (duh) with a tan, everlasting head. Caramel Flavors and smells. Body and mouthfeel of a porter but finish is of roasted coffee malt like a stout. Need a little more complexity either way. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 12, 2008 Long time coming for this rating of an American classic. Fairly sparse fizzy beige head and dark muddy brown body. Aroma of dark chocolate, plums, and some squash. Rich dark roasted malt flavors with pleasant lager characters. Moderately sweet and full-flavored with light, roasty bitterness and some soft acidity. Very solid change of pace beer for when you’re in the mood for something different.

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 7, 2008 Aroma: Espresso, burnt sugar, licorice, and lumber/sawdust.
Appearance: Burnt coffee black with a deep purple tone. Creamy, light tan, latte-colored head with pretty, sparkly little bubbles.
Flavor: Coffee, charred malts, dark cocoa, and there’s a kind of odd mineral taste that reminds me of snow or ice that’s been in the freezer too long. Finish is nice and espresso bean-bitter. Peaty notes and vodka-like alcohol comes through as the beer warms. Pretty tasty.
Palate: A tad syrupy and rather heavy. Not particularly creamy or smooth, but not overwhelming.
Overall: Bold and complex, this is something that should be emjoyed one at a time. Would pair nicely with roast beef or a rare steak. esjaygee (1531), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 2, 2008 Absolutely, without a doubt a stellar beer. I had wanted to try this beer for a very long time and thanks to some generous traders, my wish was suddenly reality. I’ve had a few beers from Sprecher. Most were average to above average so this, by far, is my favorite.
The beer pours out a jet black liquid, a nice light brown two-finger thick head with some legs on it. Aroma that I was picking up was chocolate, coffee, caramel chews. Flavor left me wondering if this in fact wasn’t some kind of stout. It had several of the same characteristics of a stout. Roasted/coffeeish malts, dark chocolate, and molasses. Mouthfeel was so smooth and clean. Somehow it just seemed light as air. Just superb.
