| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 7, 2008 Aroma: Espresso, burnt sugar, licorice, and lumber/sawdust.
Appearance: Burnt coffee black with a deep purple tone. Creamy, light tan, latte-colored head with pretty, sparkly little bubbles.
Flavor: Coffee, charred malts, dark cocoa, and there’s a kind of odd mineral taste that reminds me of snow or ice that’s been in the freezer too long. Finish is nice and espresso bean-bitter. Peaty notes and vodka-like alcohol comes through as the beer warms. Pretty tasty.
Palate: A tad syrupy and rather heavy. Not particularly creamy or smooth, but not overwhelming.
Overall: Bold and complex, this is something that should be emjoyed one at a time. Would pair nicely with roast beef or a rare steak. esjaygee (1581), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 2, 2008 Absolutely, without a doubt a stellar beer. I had wanted to try this beer for a very long time and thanks to some generous traders, my wish was suddenly reality. I’ve had a few beers from Sprecher. Most were average to above average so this, by far, is my favorite.
The beer pours out a jet black liquid, a nice light brown two-finger thick head with some legs on it. Aroma that I was picking up was chocolate, coffee, caramel chews. Flavor left me wondering if this in fact wasn’t some kind of stout. It had several of the same characteristics of a stout. Roasted/coffeeish malts, dark chocolate, and molasses. Mouthfeel was so smooth and clean. Somehow it just seemed light as air. Just superb. McGarnigle (318), Rochester, New York, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Apr 27, 2008 Bottle, Very dark, nearly black. Not much head. Coffee-like aroma. Flavor is sweet at first, but a dark roastiness then comes through leaving a smoky aftertaste. Well-made beer, but I’m not enthralled with smoke. Softly carbonated. adrian910ss (1436), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 21, 2008 Pours black with a large creamy tan head..wonderful. Large roasted chocolate malt aroma, with a touch of peat and coffee. Mmmmm... this beer kicks-ass. Sweet complex roasted maltiness. Coffee, smoked peat and light chocolate - the trifecta. The balanced and subtly really make it. Light bodied, with the classic Sprecher light fluffy creaminess. Great beer, quaffable indeed!
