Commercial Description:
This intensely dark Kulmbacher style lager has a superb malt complexity with the distinctive flavors and aromas of coffee, caramel and chocolate. A renowned smoothness and a creamy, tan head make it an all-time brewery favorite.

Bomber. Pours black yet pretty thin. The foamy tan head disappears quickly, and when held up to direct light, red highlights come through making this not opaque..but beautiful! Initial whiff reminds of a wet dog on summer day. Strange. Nose develops into a celebration of malts; peat smoked, roasted, chocolate, woodsy notes, followed by hints of coffee, vanilla, and a squeeze from a lemon wedge. Light and thin mouth feel but not lacking flavor. Coffee, chocolate, and some muted caramel malt are first to come through in the flavor, followed by notes of prunes, smoke, and molasses. Finish is lightly hopped and a touch tart citrus. Really interesting brew.

Bottle. Pours black with dark red hues when held to light. Dense light brown head. Chocolatey aromas. Rich coffee and chocolate flavors. Creamy palate. Decent beer, but I thought they were supposed to be more akin to pilsners.

A nice dark pour, with a brownish-tan head. The aroma is a nice coffee-chocolate malt. The taste is a creamy and mild mix of the same. I like this and will be buying it again.

Pours a dark mahogany color with a diminishing tan head. Aroma is lightly chocolate, coffee, caramel, and some smokiness from the wood fires. The taste is light chocolate, coffee, caramel, with a hint of smokiness. It is so smooth in terms of taste and mouthfeel that you could easily take down a 4-Pack. Very enjoyable brew. Well done.

Poured from a 16oz bottle and served in a shaker. This beer poured a rich black color with some mahogany highlights around the edges of the glass. A one-finger thick head of tan foam faded into a thin layer of small, lasting bubbles. No lace. The aroma of this beer was made up of rich caramel notes, chocolate, and a light smokiness. The flavor consisted of an abundance of balanced malts. Notes of chocolate, coffee, and caramel all intertwined seemlessly with a hint of dark fruit sneaking in towards the end. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied with light carbonation. The flavor of this beer was exceptionally balanced and smooth, making it a great session choice. Well done!

Enjoyable flavor. Not too overwhelming for a black style beer. A good flavor and a nice relaxing drink.

Bottle from the First Houston Tasting
Pours deep black with an aroma of banana. Molasses and sugar take center stage in the flavor theater. Average mouthfeel. Overall, a great brew.

Pours black, thin head. Flavor is roasts, chocolate, smoke, molasses. Creamy and smooth. Very good. Much better than I was expecting.
