Moderate caramel and coffee aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium roasted sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of long duration. This is a standout beer both in total and style. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 22, 2006 What a great looking beer! Dark, almost black, with a great brown head it screams "you are in for a treat!" First taste is almost all roastiness. There is a lot of malt but very little sweetness. The aroma is subdued but is roastiness. Once in a while a hint of sweetness comes through in the malt but then a tartness comes right behind it. As the beer warms the malts come to the front more and bring some toffee. Also, there is some bitterness but nothing but smoothness in the aftertaste. This beer is top shelf. beerlvr (5), Neenah, Wisconsin, USA does not count | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 22, 2006 Love this one. I have had Sprecher that I have left or dumped but this is exceptional. Strong but not over powering. nice combination of coffee, carmel and chocolate with a strong but pleasent after taste that hung in there. very much a great call during a poor performance on a Sunday afternoon watching the Packers stumble through a game. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Sep 12, 2006 Bottle. I was skeptical at first, but no more: one of the best lagers I’ve ever had, uncompromisingly dark and dry. Pitch black pour wih no ruby shining through, dark brown head (and legs!). Aroma of sweet malt, thick and rich, grain, very subtle funk, stronger notes of dark bread (Schwarzbrot) and molasses, and a light hint at fruitiness. Taste is very dark, strong roast ... dark bread ... brute strength! Schwarzbrot, molasses, undercurrent of caramel. Full-bodied without a trace of syrup. Not too complex, but strongly bitter and flavorful. Very crisp and solid mouthfeel, extremely dry ... prison-dry. Smooth swishing, but still a lager. Lovely long aftertaste. Overall, a powerhouse, a butt-kicker, aggressive ... but rounded and highly enjoyable. Superb (and paired well with pumpkin pie)! ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA

I thought it was very good but I can’t believe it’s the highest rated. Black pour, fairly large head with good lacing and decent head retention. Aroma is soft milk chocolate, caramel, light on coffee and roast. Smooth and creamy milky body. Really good, I hope I can find a better one though. Ibrew2or3 (2761), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 26, 2006 Pours very dark, much like a stout, with a quickly dissipating brown head. Aroma is of burnt malts and coffee. The flavor is burnt malt with a coffee influence. There are supporting flavor notes coming from a bit of molasses sweetness and dark chocolate. This beer is light in carbonation and light in body. Might even be a bit on the watery side. Nice taste, good beer. mocarmel (48), Fortville, Indiana, USA
