Musty aroma with prune and chocolate amidst roasted (almost smoky) notes. Smooth, fat mouthfeel with a dry finish. Chocolate flavor dominates... kind of like Kayo with a touch of dark fruit and some coffee bitters to finish. This started out reminding me of a kit stout but gained complexity (and started holding my interest) as it opened up.

Dark color, looks black in the lowly lit room, with a light khaki head. Aroma is dark roasted malt and coffee. The initial mouthfeel is large and it finishes the same. Initial taste is coffee, caramel, and bittersweet milk chocolate. There is a milky, creamy flavor present. Very enjoyable. Incredible depth of flavor.

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 17, 2006 Looks great, like a real stout. Not much aroma. The flavor is not like a lager at all really; more like a dunkel although a little thin in parts. I guess this combo makes a schwarzbier. The best beer in the 8pack of 4 styles by far. Very nice. Thin tan head with minimal lace. Aroma is brown sugar, light molasses, and raisins. Creamy, malty milk chocolate flavor with a light roasty finish. Pretty solid for a schwarzbier. xproudfoot (729), Paleolithic, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 18, 2006 Very complex beer, not to be taken lightly. Aroma was roasted malts and bread. Mouthfeel was heavy, contributing to a long finish. Flavor is malty and bittersweet. What many raters are taking as chocolate and roasty coffee, I took a little differently. The flavor is somewhat reminiscent of the aroma of dew and wet earth, particularly if you’ve had the experience while camping. I know, that’s a strange comparison, but seriously. The finish is long, as I said, with a nice burnt toast character. Good beer, if a bit too complex to be a casual beverage.
