Commercial Description:
This intensely dark Kulmbacher style lager has a superb malt complexity with the distinctive flavors and aromas of coffee, caramel and chocolate. A renowned smoothness and a creamy, tan head make it an all-time brewery favorite.

Bottle (500ml). via trade with Ughsmash. Poured deep ruby-brown with an average foamy-creamy-sticky lasting tan head. Mild, subtle, appealing roast, hop and lightly fruity aroma, dry and toasty. Taste is dark molasses-sweet, with coffee, chocolate, yeast, roast malt, prune, raisin and plum fruitiness, detectable hops too - nice balance of bitter and sweet. Mouthfeel is only lightly carbonated, a little watery, and mildly acidic - really, this is an excellent schwarzbier, the roastiness intensifies as it warms - I’d have it again in a shot - thanks for this one, Ughsmash!

Just a damn good brew. The head pours nice and frothy. You get the aromas, the full taste, and a nice, clean finish.

bottle. deep black with a small tanned ring of head. the aroma is fairly quiet and subtle - some wheat, toast malt, and mild dark fruits. mild bitter roast flavour with some sticky sweetness and dark fruit notes. not bad, though not particularly interesting IMO. Thanks for sharing, Len.

Glad I’m getting to try this one, thanks so much Phil, you da man! Opens with a dark, almost opaque pour, sporting a thin, slightly watered mocha head of medium sized bubbles. Mild roasty aromas, light coffee bean, molasses, and milk chocolate. Flavours are much of the same. Roasty, chocolate, with a mild fruity sweetness. Smooth finish, lingering fruit and coffee flavours. A good session schwarz, if there is one. Thanks so much Phil! As a side note, I have heard that if you put some spring water in this one, it will bring it down to about 4% ABV, and it will then seem like a mild stout. I’ll have to try it.

Thanks to SpringLicker for this one. Dark walnut pour, clear with a thick lingering head. Sweet burnt caramel and roasted malts in the aroma, as well as hints of black pat molasses. Roasted malt taste and decent carbonation. Nothing to be overly excited about, but this rather dull taste leads to a wonderful lingering finish with dark chocolate, roasted malt, & light hops with a metallic hint. Medium body with a slick/sticky mouth feel. This one just did not do it for me as much as other schwarzbier. I wonder if I just wasn’t in the mood...Perhaps I’ll try it again one day.

(02.16.06) 16 oz brown bottle from DiCarlo’s, Mundelein, IL. Black ruby hued lager having a small tan head. Soft carbonation. Corn/nutty aroma. Full bodied lager that starts with light malt sweetness and dried prune/roasted malt flavors. Finishes dry with roasted malt/ bitterness fade. Full of roast malt flavors and intensely flavorful. Smooth, creamy, and immense beer. Delicious.

16 oz bottle. Black color, thick tan head. Aroma of malt with a hint of coffee. This beer has a lot of body; bittersweet taste that finishes off smooth. A full bodied interpretation of a Schwarzbier.
