| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 30, 2005 Pours black with a huge tan head that slowly fades. Aroma of dark roast, and some bittersweet chocolate. Flavor of chocolate nibs, some coffee, caramel, and a slight licorice the fits in between the main flavors. Light body, silky palate made frothy buy the head. Extremely drinkable for such a huge delicious roast malt profile. If homemade hot cocoa was turned into beer this would be it. jewedekind (450), Middleton, Wisconsin, USA

Pours a fine brown head with good retention. Deep amber-brown. Aroma of nuts and coffee. Flavor starts big with roasted malt then chocolate and well done beefsteak. Fine tobacco. Ashes. Short on palate at first then long roasted nuts in the finish. Fantastic. stoutchap (297), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 26, 2005 Wow! This was a surprise. I saw it was a lager and thought - well, maybe it will be ok because it’s "Black Bavarian Style" whatever that means. Whatever they do with this - they do it right. It’s no stout - but certainly is no lager! Pourse dark, dark brown with a two finger tan head. Light on the aroma, but great malty taste hits you right from the beginning with chocolate tones. A medium mouthfeel with the carbonation you would expect in a lager, but some of the weight you would expect from a stout. Finishes with a bit of hoppiness. Very enjoyable. Aroma is light in roasted coffee and malt, also has some more earthy notes of pete and fresh dirt. Flavor is creamy and rich, some tones of chocolate, malt, wheat, cream. All blending quite good with a mouthfeel that is crisp and somewhat dry, adding to a coffee flavor towards the end. burgerlicious (308), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA
