The head pulls a magic trick, one second it is there, and the other it is gone. Nice and dark. Tastes of chocolate and coffee. A little thin as far as the body goes, but a good beverage all the same. | 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Feb 27, 2005 Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, caramel, roasted grain), moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs, apricot), lightly yeasty (dough). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Sadly, this smells like an American stout or porter much more than a German schwarzbier. Kinda sour in the finish too, which just ain’t right. Not terrible, but definitely not impressed, and not really to style. legion242 (1586), Richardson, Texas, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Feb 27, 2005 Deep garnet in color; medium head. Lots of roasted malt. Coffee notes dominate. Tiiny bit of tartness in the sides of the mouth. Subtracted a few points in overall because I met the owner one time and he was a complete asshole. gws57 (1138), Saint Charles, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 27, 2005 Had this on draught in Milwaukee. Thin, orange head, nose of chocolate and smoke, taste of caramel and malt. This one was good. wxman (588), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/20 | Feb 12, 2005 Best way to describe this brew is a lager version of Porter. Much the same familiarities of a Porter: chocolate malt taste and similar aroma and mouthfeel -- at least initially. After the swallow you detect the lager characteristics such as the clean, crisp aftertaste and hop bitterness with none of the Porter mouth-coating feel. Overall a very good brew; something I’ve come to expect from Sprecher. WisconsinBeer (526), St Paul, Minnesota, USA

Very creamy and sweet but just enough dryness to keep it from being too syrupy. Coffee with sugar flavors. Wouldnt mind drinking this anytime. And four 16oz bottles..perfect.
