Commercial Description:
This intensely dark Kulmbacher style lager has a superb malt complexity with the distinctive flavors and aromas of coffee, caramel and chocolate. A renowned smoothness and a creamy, tan head make it an all-time brewery favorite.

Pours dark brown with mahogany edges. A large chunky tan head over the pour, has great retention and leaves some some lacing. Aroma is lots of roast, caramel, a decent amount of cocoa, char, and some herbal hop notes. Flavor is char, chocolate, some sweet grass, a little toffee, roast, caramel, black tea. Finish is char, burnt sugar, herbal hops, and light bitterness. Palate is medium thickness with a creamy entry, a slightly chalky finish and is slightly sticky. Pretty good

Aromas of chocolate, roast, toasted nuts, and caramel. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head, some red highlights underneath. Flavors of chocolate and caramel initially. Roasted malts and coffee notes come in the finish and create a nice dry feeling on the palate. The beer then finishes lager clean with a nice crispness. Really nice and incredibly enjoyable.

Sampled on tap at the sprecher tour (glendale, wi). Pours a blackish pour with modwrate offwhite head. Aromas are lught sweet roasted maltiness balanced by a touch of creaminess. Taste is similar, roasted malt mixed with an underlying sweet creaminess that takes away and harshness. Balanced, nice body, sessionable. A winner!

16 oz bottle. Deeeep opaque brown, with a small brown head. A malty aroma with loads of fruit, candy sweetness, and licorice. Malt and coffee and even some roast in the flavour. Little bitterness. On the thin side right out of the fridge, but it fills out as it warms. A helluva lager.

Draft at Old Chicago Blaine MN. Appearance was dark brown/black with some ruby overtones. Scent was definitely roasty with some dark chocolate. Taste was dark chocolate with some malt sweetness balanced with some endnote bitterness. No head or lace apparent. Mouthfeel was nice but not as much as I was expecting. Very good beer but frankly I was expecting more from the previous reviews.

(11/8/08) Draught at a vegan restaurant called "Horizon" in Philadelphia. Dark brown color. Aroma of malt, some toastiness/roastiness, caramel, some chocolate and light nutty notes. Sweet flavor with toasted malt, caramel and mild noble hops bitterness in the finish. Medium-bodied. A well-made tasty Dunkel.
