| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 18, 2008 22oz bomber. Pours a deep, dark black - but not opaque. Dark brown and ruby highlights shine through. The head pours thin and light, is short-lived, and leaves no lace. The aroma is dark toast breadiness and mild chocolate with some caramel sweetness. The flavor starts a little roasty like sweetened coffee - bready and toasty with a light roastiness that more closely resembles over-toasted bread than it does coffee. There is a strong caramel sweetness with a light, grainy malt tang. At mid-palate there is a fruity hop bitterness, strong roasted character, and stronger malt sweetness. The finish is mostly full with chocolate and coffee notes, a pleasant hop bitterness, and a balancing sweetness. The mouthfeel is crisply carbonated but sticky and thick in body. Overall - a pleasant black lager. It’s a bit big and roasty for Schwarzbier I think, but tasty nevertheless. Great for cool fall weather. jeff789 (422), Pennsylvania, USA

Slightly smoky, a hint of licorice, unsweetened chocolate, caramel.... This is the quintessential schwarzbier... I would have a hard time finding a porter i like better than this... This beer is amazing... No alcohol taste, thins as it finishes, incredibly complex... RCL (1496), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 1, 2008 Light aroma of real licorice; like dried wooden licorice root licorice. Rich, malty flavor with more of that licorice root thing going on. mcjay (304), Neenah, Wisconsin, USA
