Commercial Description:
Barley Wine Ale is a legendary top-fermented brew with a deep amber/orange color, and intense fruit and malt nose that is laced with alcohol accented by the sweet aromas of Port. This "wine" made with barley is brewed with a French yeast culture, and possesses a complex flavor of rich malt, fruit esters, and sherry-like qualities that is delicately balanced with hops.

Bottle at the RBSG grand tasting on 6/23/07: Pours a transparent copper amber with a thin, wispy-lacing white head. Aroma of lightly caramely sweet malt with a touch of light fruity esters and a hint of tartness. Body starts thinner and slightly sugary but has a touch of bourbon and fruity tartness. Better than the regular barleywine, but not by much.

RBSG 07 Minneapolis Grand Tasting: Caramel ruby colored, light creamy head, nice lacing. Nose of tart grassy hop, dusty malts. Finishes with some alcohol and tart grassy fruit. Ok, but a bit thin.

2005 Edition. Deep amber with a fine, thin tan head. Rich, malt-driven aroma thick with caramel, toffee, molasses along with red fruits, oak, vanilla, and maderized characteristics. Very robust flavor profile which includes many of the characteristics found in the aroma. Quite sweet, but not cloying, with distinct bourbon and oxidized flavors. Alcohol is well-integrated into the body but still shows its strength in a long, warm finish.

1L bottle, which I finally popped open at BCTC 2007. Pours a hazy, orangish-amber color; slight, off-white head with patchy retention. Dense, candy sugar and boozy maple syrup in the aroma; not much of a bourbon character. Full, chewy mouthfeel: overly sweet maple syrup and sugary mouthfeel upfront; some dried fruits and chewy candy sugar; way too sweet. Lengthy, sugary and slightly tart citrus finish. Disappointing.

Thanks to hopdog for sharing this... Appears a semi-transparent dark amber with a small beige head that slowly fades out. Spots and streaks of lacing is left around the glass. Smell is of bourbon, light apple, spicy plum, caramel, raisins, vanilla, and oak. Taste is of the mentioned aromas with some citrus and vanilla coming through more in the taste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with notes of apple, caramel, vanilla, oak, and caramel candy swirling along the palate for a warm and deceiving finish.
