Brown cola body, no head and hardly any carbonation apparent. Ruh-roh. Does have an edging of bubbles, but that’s pretty much it. It looks like flat Pepsi. Nose of Diacetyl, toffee, some earthy/musty notes, dark malts. No peat is present, which is disappointing. Also pick up some boozy notes on the back end, probably from the barrels. Tastes pretty similar to what it smells like, again not much if any peat, but it does have a nice caramel buttery flavor that is somewhat appealing. Medium bodied, very flat mouthfeel. As a result it is smooth, but again it’s like drinking a flat soda, it’s just missing something. Brief finish, kind of putters out, some caramel and bourbon, and then nothing. Would like to try another bottle, but it seems like carbonation is an issue with a lot of these bottles judging by the reviews. IrishBoy (2718), Bakersfield, California, USA

Just a slight hiss as bottle opened, almost flat, very little carbonation. Tmoney99 (4771), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Poured clear dark brown color with a large rocky brown head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Good chocolate malt, vanilla and woody aroma. Medium to full body with smooth texture. Heavy malty bittersweet flavor with a heavy bittersweet finish of long duration. Very enjoyable complex brew. Palidor19 (1785), Brandon, Florida, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Oct 18, 2007 this beer taste like a fine liquor for a good reason. the beer was preserved in fine wood caskets. the taste of rich malts, sweet syrup flavor, wood and low bitterness give a perfect combo. their very little carbination, but the rest is well worth the price nick76 (2675), Tampa, Florida, USA

The appearance is red brown with a thin head. The flavor is like the aroma with a buttery flavor and a fairly strong punch. The palate is slightly oily. Overall this is a great beer. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 5, 2007 1l bottle. Pours a clear ruby-red port color with a billowy brown head. Aroma is a unique blend of sweeter notes like caramel, chocolate, vanilla, licorice, and a hint of coffee alongside roasted malt alongside the unmistakable alcoholic bite and woody/peaty notes of brown liquor. Taste is not as full as you’d expect but also much mellower than you’d expect, with a low-key sweetness of caramel, chocolate and vanilla giving way to a smooth and long finish staggeringly similar to a mellow bourbon or whisky. Immensely complex and extremely delicious. Elizavyeta (110), Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 5, 2007 Gloriously dense dark-brown ale has a thick, bread-like consistency with a foamy white head that dissipates quickly.
The aroma is that of oak, chocolate, and rye, yet the actual flavor of the beer is somewhat one-sided. The bourbon stays in the background and never shines through. We are left, instead, with a toothsome, dessert-like beer; not bad, just not what I was expecting.
Would be paired exceptionally well with a mountain-style cheese like comte or cantal; that failing, a medium cheddar. badlizard (2368), Berkeley, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Oct 1, 2007 1000 ml bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar. Mahogany brown with ruby highlights and a fluffy off-white head. Great Bourbon, oak, and vanilla aroma. A beautiful play of texture and flavors just in the medium body palate. Initial caramel and chocolate taste transitioning to an amzing bourbon and vanilla taste and finishing with a nice smooth oakiness. The alcohol is very well hidden allowing for a richly complex and flavorful beer that is wonderfully drinkable. This beer is under-rated.
