Commercial Description:
This strong, dark lager was originally brewed as a liquid bread to sustain Bavarian monks while fasting. Its complex malt character comes from brewing with many varieties of dark roasted caramel malt and long periods of cold storage.

bottle - Pours dark amber with a 2 finger, fading head. The aroma is very malty and has a hint of dark fruit in it. The flavor is sweet, as expected, with some caramel and a touch of fruit as well as mild alcohol. It’s medium bodied and very easy to drink.

Bottle. Dark brown, with a thick tan head. Sweet malt aroma, with molasses coming through. Very sweet and a bit smoky. While the body is medium, this seems like a heavier beer.

Bottle. Cola colored with a small beige head. Sweet caramel malt aroma with some dried fruit and molasses. Flavor was sweet and malty, but not as sweet as I expected. Pumpernickel bread, dried fruit and caramel were the predominant flavors. Tasty.

wax capped bottle. rubyish brown color, thin foamy dark tan head that goes quickly. aroma is over-ripe bananas and a bit rummy. also sweet deep roasted malt like molasses. flavor is sweet molasses, watery, and some alcohol - the kind from over-ripe bananas. dark malt finish. duped by the wax dipped cap and higher price compared to the regular bottling.

Dark brown, foamy tan head. Aroma is very bready - lots of malt and some plum. Flavor is deep and syrupy, with caramel and roastyness. Not too thick either, and ends with a more balanced finish.

22oz Bottle with wax seal: Pours deep brown/ruby in color with a good amount of clarity in the light and a fading tan head. Aroma has lots of German malts, metallic chocolate, brown sugar and raisins. Flavor has a nice malt character, without being syrupy or sweet, rather nice roasty and warming. Has a metallic hint in the chocolatey malts with notes of dark maple, oak, tobacco, burnt figs/plums and later peppery alcohol hint in the long roasty/spicy finish. This is a solid Doppelbock that is highly drinkable and not sticky or sweet like many other attempts of the style.
