It doesn’t have any the caramel tastes common to so many bocks, but rather alcohol and sweet malt. The alcohol is prominent inthe flavor and aroma and I guessed this was much stronger than it actually is. On the thick side for the style. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle. hopdog (5591), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 17, 2007 16oz bottle acquired in trade with Ughsmash (thanks!). Poured a dark reddish / brown color with an averaged sized tan head. Aromas of caramel, chocolate, roast and a little nutty. I was also getting some smoke as I drank and smelled more. Tastes of caramel, chocolate, brown sugary sweetness, raisins and some plums. On the sweeter side. holdenn (1443), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Feb 16, 2007 A pint shared from drewbeerme. Poured a dark amber brown with a small head. Sweet aroma of malt and carmel, the flavor reflected the aroma with brown sugar and bready flavors. Lightly carbonated. Not bad but a little too sweet for me. drewbeerme (2282), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 15, 2007 1pint bottle. labeled as 8%alv. pours reddish brown with small off-white head. nose has nice toasted grains and caramel. flavor although a tad tame has nice caramel and bready notes. flavor is very balanced. mouthfeel is a tad thin and watery but carbination is low-medium. a solid doppelbock and a steal at $1.50/pint-size bottle, the best sprecher i’ve had so far. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 12, 2007 Big fan of dopple bocks in general, but lately I’ve been noticing a lot of diacetyl. Hopefully this one bucks the trend. Pours dark brown with only slightly reddish hues. Decent head. Looks like a porter. The nose is sweet and roast, but there’s a heck of a lot more toast that I’d expect. A little chocolate malt and some roast too. On the palate this is smooth and creamy, not just for the style, but for all lagers and most beers, including ales. The flavor profile is similar to the aroma. There’s a profound balance reached here and fewer other places by dopplebocks. The sweetness is present, and road with chocolate hints and caramel, but it is balanced by a a substantial toasty note and significant german hops. The finish is crisp with very very little diacetyl butterscotch. a bit creamy, a very dry and slightly roasty aftertaste. Perhaps a bit herbal? In any event, I liked this quite a bit and would gladly drink and buy more of this. kenb (1100), Oregon, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 10, 2007 17 oz bottle via Degarth (thanks!). Pours a dark dark redish brown with a tiny tan head. Nose is yeasty, fruity, alcoholic. Taste begins with some fruity esters, plums, rasins, pears, then a little chocolate and toffee, some roastiness and even some subtle spicey hops. Medium/Full body. High carbonation. joebrew (608), Farewell Minny; Hello Puyallup, Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 31, 2007 Pours a dark, dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma of chocolate, raisens, and whatever sweet malt flavor you can imagine. Nice sweet toastyness and chocolate. Very nice dopple that is not as creamy or filling as a Salvator. Very tasty. detroiter (958), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 28, 2007 Pours a deep brown, with even deeper ruby undertones. Tan head that dissolves quickly. No lace. Warming sweet liquor aroma - honey maltiness galore. Oh ho ho!
A bunch of flavors fly at me at once. I need a nother sip to differentiate between them. Make that two more sips. OK three more. The maltiness is like a burnt caramel with a roasted raisiny-honey flavor as well. Can you roast raisins? Oak and alcohol. Peppery hops. Molasses. Some bitter hops. Dark honey and faint cola syrup in the aftertaste. Splendid.
Lightly carbonated and very thick texture. Fantastic for a dessert beer. Or a main course, screw the meal, this stuff’s excellent.
