Commercial Description:
This strong, dark lager was originally brewed as a liquid bread to sustain Bavarian monks while fasting. Its complex malt character comes from brewing with many varieties of dark roasted caramel malt and long periods of cold storage.

bought the blue 1 liter pop-top so i could keep the bottle for home brew, on sale at mgm for under $8. non-existiant head, minimal lacing, fairly flat, poured dark brown. malty aroma, smokey oak notes, sweet taste, some hops. a little disappointed in this one, lacking body, complexity, much better dopples out there.

Dark amber red pour; transparent with a loosely clinging ring of white. Lovely, laid back aroma of red licorice, raisins, and rich, warm caramel rolls dusted with cinnamon and cotton candy sugar. Sticky, dark, and pleasant; cool, quiet lager yeast. Taste brings the spoiled bit of banana and deep brown spices; tangy, salty molasses slathers itself thickly over the dark breads of pumpkin, walnuts, and almonds. Candy sugar and caramel malts provide a smooth balance of crunchy sweetness that seems to sit just perfectly; almost with a peppermint coolness. Apple skins, toast, and some woody, mild tannic tones toward the finish; smooth, medium bodied, and soft in the mouth. Finishes with a drying pulse of caramelized sugar and nut skins. Malty, rich, and just intensely accurate to style; when this brewery strays from the german styles things tend to get messy, but this is a fantastic example of the great things it can do. Full, blanketing, and satisfying on a cold night.

I think this style gets extra points and there is a narrow range on the main suppliers of it, not always deserved. Yes, this particular beer was roasted and gave off a roasted and licorice aroma, and was black and in fact smooth mouthfeel. But it was fairly ordinary and certainly a bomber was too much. I have enjoyed this style produced by others.

16 oz. bottle via trade with Ughsmash - Pours a clear brown color with a 1/2 finger thick light tan head. Very light spotty lacing. Aroma is caramel malt and light esters. Flavor is toasted and caramel malt. Not too sweet. Medium body. A very nice DB. Thanks Jason.

Thanks to Ughsmash for this one! A good tan head rides over a deep dark garnet colored body. The head recedes quickly as some Dopplebocks do. Caramel malt aroma with a touch of raisin. Good malty Dopple.

Pours a deep clear burgundy brown with a thin head of fine beige bubbles. The nose is a bright, deep, malty blend of apples and raisins. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a warm malty finish with just a hint of alcohol warmth. Sweet and malty with notes of raisin, brown sugar, and dark caramel. Nice and warming at the finish, this is a great cold weather lager.

24 fl oz bottle, thanks to Carsten. Pours deep amber, golden and visible. Has a diminished off-white head. Deep and dark barley, dry woody and some notes of dried raisins. Flavour is dry, malty, breadish and a slight chocolate smoothness and slight bitter. Ends with a woody tone and a warming alcohol.

Bottle. Pours a brown colour with a good creamish beige head. Aroma of some roasted caramel and roasted malt with dark fruits. Good mouthfeel. The flavor has a roasty maltiness with dark fruits, roastish malt, some wood and just a bit of spices. Sweet caramellic roastish bit spiced finish. Bit too sweet but a fine brew.
