Aroma is damn fruity with some mildly rancid/rotten notes melded with alcohol. Oddly it smells better than the words suggest. I’m assuming the aroma stems from peat and is intended to be smokey, but I’m getting rancid instead. Body is a ruddy amber with a pinky thin tan head. Fairly smokey in the fore followed by rich sweet caramel accented malt. Too smokey for my personal tastes, but i imagine those that like peat would appreciate this. hotstuff (3175), Indiana, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 5, 2006 Bottle. Medium sized ivory fizzy head that mostly diminished, poor lacing, transparent, fizzy, fast-rising carbonation, and a reddish brown hue. Malty, caramel, sweet, toasty, and smokey nose. Flavor was sweet malt, caramel and smokey. Smooth, thin mouthfeel. Light body. Jabswitch (212), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 2, 2006 I am quite new to Scotch Ales. This one had a brownish head and a deep copper color. Aroma was sweet - with a caramel character. This type of ale is a little too sweet and rich for my taste. It was definitely a high quality ale but just not to my taste. Very drinkable for a high alcohol content. HopsOrDie (687), New Lenox, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 12, 2006 Pours brown with a thin white white. Smells mostly of peat barley with some smokiness. Flavor is rich with peat tasting malt, and some earthy hop flavor. Mostly balanced with a slight edge to the malt. There is a lot of peat in the beginning, but as you work your way down the pint, more flavors come out: leather, caramel, toast, and grassiness. egajdzis (3629), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 7, 2006 Poured a hazy reddish brown color with a small, light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malts, light citrus, nuts, and peat. Taste of sticky caramel malts, peat, nuts, and low bitterness. Some alcohol in the finish. hopdog (5604), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 21, 2006 16oz bottle. Poured a deeper and cloudy brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of peat, smoke, toffee, earthy and I’m also getting some light woodiness. Tastes of toffee, smoke, some dark fruits, and some peat. Alcohol content well hidden. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 18, 2006 From a cobalt blue swing top 1 liter bottle with a short blurb and info on the back of bottle.
Poured a hazy reddish-orangy amber with foamy head that settled into a thin lacing.
Had a nose of musty smoke, peat, ripe fruits, molasses, caramel and a light spicy alcohol.
Moderate carbonation and a dryish, creamy smooth medium bodied mouthfeel.
Peat, dark fruits, plum, dates mixed in molasses, toasted malts and a subtle sweet breadiness, the alcohol is a little spicy, but otherwise well masked, a dry malty finish, overall good drinkability.
An interesting take on a Scottish Ale, other quality brew from Sprecher.
