Pigfoot (2225), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA May 13, 2008 Shakparo:
ale made from sorghum & millet, brewed without wheat or barley, fire-brewed, African-style...with a label featuring a trio of African pals, giraffe, lion, and elephant traveling together against an African sunset without once mauling or stampeding one another...hakuna matata!
16 ounce bottle, 5.7% abv.
Poured into a Delirium Tremens tulip glass. Elephants going back to Africa, so to speak.
Very hazy apricot appearance, disappearing head...
Slightly sour and funky aroma, at first...smells like a spiced wheat beer, though we know it isn’t. Reminds me of a yeasty Belgian pale ale, oddly enough.
Bright flash of flavor in the mouth. Citrusy feel, then softly fading, leaving a faint lemony ring behind. Feel almost hefe weizen-like at times, though there’s no wheat here...so this is what sorghum beer tastes like, eh? Not bad...
Although for a while, it gets too acidic and astringent for me...
got to say, not the sort of thing I’d want to have too often...
Strykzone (959), Wood River, Illinois, USA Aug 14, 2008 Murky looking unfiltered beer with an immediately disappearing head. Aroma jumps out and bites the nose with tart hop. Pomegranite or cactus. Flavor is as murky as the appearance. Some kind of fruit, mango maybe? Muddled. This beer is not for everybody. Put me on that list. PorterPounder (2828), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jul 29, 2008 St. Petersburg, Shep’s Deli - stubby 16 oz bottle. Pours a murky dark and dank orange with absolutely no head. Aroma of herbs and a room freshener - odd. Extremely odd flavor. I realize this is a gluten free product - but the flavor nowhere approximates the flavor of any beer I have laid across my tongue. Tastes like orange Tang that has been left out in the sun too long. Odd, rotten fruit finish. Thank God that my body can proces whatever it is they left out of this - cause I would be in a world of hurt if this is all I could drink. phishpond417 (1418), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jul 21, 2008 When rating sorgum beers, I think one needs to be very openminded. If you have a gluten intolerance, and regular beer is definately out of the picture- then these types of brews are blessings. So with that out of the way: the beer pours a cloudy yellow colour with an off white head. Aroma is sorta stanky- no lie, but you have to have an understanding nose. Rice, corn and a sake like aroma. Tatse is sort of sour, but tolerable. Beerlando (1271), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 6, 2008 Pours a cloudy brazen color with a small, fizzy, off-white head. Minimal spotty lacing noted. To say that the aroma is heavily spiced would be an understatement. Basically smelling like an overly sweet wheat beer, it seems as though the brewers dumped just gobs of sorghum, nutmeg, and allspice in without regard for subtlety or pairing. Flavors, too, were intensely sweet up front, turning towards abrasively spicy and almost bitter on the back end. Very little, if any, hop character, with the bitterness stemming from the seemingly raw spices contained within. Medium-plus, sticky, syrupy body. Oh what a vile creation this is! Absolutely wretched from start to finish. ZephramStark (1), , Wisconsin, USA does not count Jun 18, 2008 Shockingly sweet, dry cider and ginger flavor that grows on you and becomes delicious by the third or fourth bottle. Best buzz of any beer I’ve tried. Most notably, a beer without gluten means no wheat and barley farts. $7/4pack-16oz
