Light nutty and bready aroma with light toffee and floral hops. The flavor is a real delight, sweetness up front, then some nuttiness, finally a brilliant crisp bitter hop bite. Really quite hoppy. Crisp bitter finish with a medium body. Excellent. MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA

Good malt nose, creamy caramel, flavor is at first very sweet with loads of caramel and good chewy toffee, then come a surprising load of big hops at the end as a surprise. Very sticky and creamy. I’d drink this damn often if it was in my area. 1FastSTi (2580), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA

Couldn’t smell much. On tap, in a bar, perhaps that’s why. Isn’t pleasurable or disappealing. Low in carbonation and texture. Had a bit of malt flavor with a pleasing finish. Notice the hops when I swallowed. Resampled 7/16 and it was much better. MIBRomeo (1965), Wisconsin, USA

Ar: weak faint aroma of earthy and a bit of stale hops.
Pa: a little thin but some creaminess to it to light
Flvr: touch of hop and touch of malt pretty plain though
Ovrl not bad but its pretty blah and at least cheap BeerAteHer (384), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 30, 2004 At the outset this strikes me as much like an "Extra Special Bitter", though pure examples of the latter tend to be maltier and more rust-colored. The aroma of Sprecher Spezial is superb, very rich and buttery, high-gravity and extremely hopped; and these elements last to the final drop. The flavor is similar -- very straightforward and hoppy with undertones of fine malt and licorice. I realize I’m on the higher end of the scale for this one, but I stand by my rating in that it has three elements I prize: hop-bitterness, richness and economy! Nice toasted almond aroma, toffeeish. Smooth, fairly clean, a little musty gunpowder hop finish. Festive. A good food beer, esp. pizza. jtw (944), farmington, Michigan, USA
