Taste is more of the same but the flavors meld really nicely. Starts off with some mellow smoke then the roasted flavors kick in. A bit on the sweet side like most bocks but has a nice lively mouthfeel that washes away the stickiness. All of the flavors meld together real nice. hezron (604), Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 24, 2005 Pours a cola brown with a light brown head which diminishes. Thin nose with some cark caramel and light chocolate. Nuggy caramel and chocolate flavor with some coffee in the very short finish. Fades too quickly. Medium body with a watery texture. It gets better as it warms. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 1, 2005 Bewitchingly dark ruby red color when held up to the light, otherwise it shadows over into black when naught. Perfectly thick and lush dark cream head of soft foam slowly persists up to about a half inch thick after a rapid pour. Fades off to a ghostly skim and slender collar. The lacing sticks in a disorderly fashion of large globs and spots.
Nose is plentiful in a softer sense when given an adequate sniffing.
Smokey toffee malt with a plummy undercoat takes up most of its display while other wiffs tend to bring in chocolate and dry heated spice.
Taste is inticingly fun, with lots of miraculously woven flavors. Lighter, softer entrance with light toasty caramel. Smokey, earthy middle builds gracefully. Chocolate lacing begins. Dark grains procede. Grassy hop tickles and spices. Crispy burnings of cinnamon french toast spread with plummy-apricot jam and chocolate muffins fade into the background where the moderate roast of left over chocolate breads breaths into a very subtle drying very late. Fantastic finish! The chocolate coats the mouth with a very lovely warming softness and muffin-like fluffyness that sticks for a good length.
Feel is pretty quick overall with a slippery front and smoothness to it. Keeps a medium body mostly. Seemingly builds a bit towards the end with a gradual increase in creamyness and fluffyness which broadens into some heavier tones and finishes well with lengthy chocolate leftovers and toasty/roasty warmth.
Oh how I would love to try this on-tap someday, I’m thinking the chocolate tones would really take over and make for an almost creamed porter-like experience. Still, this bottled version is sublime! Drinkability is very easy goin’ and lubricious. Goes down fast and without much effort. This is probably my new favorite from Sprecher putting the O-fest and Black Bavarian a close second. Great stuff!

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Mar 11, 2005 This beer has an odd, metallic bitterness to it. Toasty, malty, and rich body. Very sweet, caramelly, candy apples. Decent body and fairly smooth; aftertaste reminds me of bittersweet chocolate. Other than a sweet malt aroma, it lacks in that department. A good drink despite obvious flaws. MaxPower (961), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 10, 2005 Pours a hazy dark reddish brown with a small light brown head that leaves some lacing. Sweet chocolate cookie dough and dark fruit aromas, plum, dark cherry, caramel, smoky chocolate flavors that blend together so nicely. Medium to full bodied and a very smooth, velvety soft mouthfeel, nice sweet candy like finish. I just wish I had a few more bottles of this well done lager. redmosquito (172), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 24, 2005 This beer is just beautiful. A deep coppery garnet with a light brown head, I probably should have taken a photo. The aroma is initially roasted with hints of chocolate, but as it warms it changes to nutty with hints of toffee and spicey yeast. The flavor is clean and malty with a lingering yeast flavor on my tongue. This beer is excellent, a special thanks goes out to my friend who bought this for me for xmas. An aroma of red apples, caramel and leather but is is far too subtle. Dry and roasty with fruity flavors and german hops. Murphy (1759), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
