I've never been a Kolsch fan - something about the crackery falvor seems dramatically unispired to me. But this one was midlyl interesting, a bit full in the mouth and definitely quaffable. I've come around on many styles I've previously despised so maybe Kolsch is in the cards for me, thanks to the Springfield Brewing co.

Tasted 6/1/09. 12oz bottle. Filtered with a pale golden hue. White ring of head. Cereal grains and citrus in the nose. Soggy wood and a wisp of strawberries. Medium bodied with a bright effervescence and quite a crisp palate. Initially sweet and bready, but the astringency and bitterness take over and last the rest of the way. Crisp and tangy. Grassy hops with a splash of grapefruit bitterness. Quite tasty and definitely easy on the palate.

Tap at the brewpub. The body was medium gold with a bright white head. The aroma was sweet and malty with some cake donuts. There was also peaches and sweet potatoes. The taste was bread with some caramel notes. There was also some almonds. A lightly bitter finish. Very nicely done.

Grassy aroma with hay notes. Taste follows suit. Overall, just completely average- even though it is pretty true to style.

Golden color, not much head. Yeasty nose is faint, with pine and lemon notes. Mildly bitter flavor kicks up a notch on the finish. Lively mouthfeel. Nice beer for a warm day.

Pours a golden color, thin head but loots of lace. Aroma is apricots, peaches, yeasty motes, and a sweet honey aroma. Flavor is extremely mild and quaffable, but still retains decent complexity. Appleskins, toast, almonds, and lemongrass all make an appearance. Refreshing.

Draft samples at St Louis Microfest, 5/13/06: This is a clean crisp and tart example of the style, pretty true to the original styles of Cologne.

tap at st louis microfest. pours pale yellow as pale as you can get with a small soapy white head. spicy, lightly grainy nose with some light hops. flavors are light, crisp and spicy. very light body but very refreshing. just doenst have enough kolsh qualities that i try to find in this style. still, not a bad beer on a hot muggy sw Missouri day. very clean ferment.
