mad_scotsman (147), Fairview Heights, Illinois, USA May 4, 2007 Poured copper in color with an off white head. With a somewhat spicy aroma. Had hints of sour fruit and a bit of a bite on the finish xmarcnolanx (680), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Mar 30, 2007 There is something strange going on at Square One brewery. For some reason all of their beers have similar profiles: They are either citrusy or otherwise strange-fruity, and many of them exhibit qualites of malting traditionally found in scotch ales. I am not sure what is going on here, but it is really different, and I am undecided on how much I like it. I guess it depends on their beer. If you want to read a rating that sums up how I feel about this beer, read vyvvy’s rating. Yes, the lazy way out, but seriously says everything about this beer. vyvvy (1722), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Mar 25, 2007 Argh, this is another that falls in the line with the far-too-often problems with Square One beers. Pours hazy copper with a frothy off-white head. The aroma is yeasty and citrusy / nectar blend. This reminds me more of their dunkelweizen than anything remotely Belgium. There is a light graininess to the aroma. Medium body with rich smoothiness and very soft carbonation - I would have liked to have seen this more crisp and refreshing. Starts with nectarine fruits and smooth graininess. There is some lemon meringue, clove spice and pepper. The finish has a noticeable spicy bite and lingering sour fruit taste. This is an okay beer beer, but it doesn’t seem as much like a saison as I’d like. While I’m told the yeast they use is very Belgium it sure doesn’t show that way in the beers. And the fruits that come out don’t seem to fit for the style. For a brewery that shows signs of times at being something very good the ball is dropped far too often.
