Commercial Description:
Behind its magnificent ruby-red colour, St. Ambroise Raspberry Ale reveals its refreshing charm from the moment you encounter its bouquet and flavour. Made with fresh raspberries and choice sun-ripened hops, it gently engages your tastebuds in a delicious explosion of flavours. Its delicate fruit aromas marry perfectly with the pleasant hop character typical of all St-Ambroise ales. Brewed in Quebec, just once a year, it's a unique summertime treat.

Bottle. Ruby body, with a small white-pink head and light lacing on the glass. Tart raspberry aroma with mild hints of cherry, touch muted at times. Overly sweet fruit flavour, raspberry jam, with a touch of green vine and tartness. Average to medium palate. This has a big fruit factor, and its sort of nice but it needs more complexity to make it drinkable in any kind of quantity.

Bottle (2x341ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc, mds and tupalev, bottles from blankboy and tupalev. Deep clear ruby with a decent sized pink foamy head. I found the aroma a little light, slightly tart berryfruit, a hint of table cream, some sharp yeast character on warming, even more "real" raspberry (almost 8/10). The fruit character in the taste was a little less differentiated - I wrote "redfruit" - sticky sweet fruit with building pepper yeast sharpness building to a dry, oddly bitter finish. Decent body, sticky and dry, lightly syrupy mouthfeel - this smells really pleasing, but I can’t help but think it’s a bit of a miss - I’d like it to have either more sourness or less dry bitterness. But I liked it well enough...

Bottle: Poured a deep red ale with a medium bubbly slightly pink head with average retention. Aroma of real raspberry is pretty enticing while not being overly sweet. Taste is quite interesting with some real raspberry presence that is noticeable with some sweetness but not overly or disgustingly sweet. Malt presence is a bit low and bodies a tad too watery for my own liking. Lacks some complexity to make this truly wonderful but very good try nonetheless.

Hazy, dark woody look, whit smallish top. Creamy nose, maltose, light aroma, citric, woody and vanilla. Medium bodied, berry like fruitiness, chewy texture. Smooth dark malty finish.

Bottle. Dark, murky mahogany with a medium white head and lacing. The aroma consists of cherries and tart fruity raspberries. The flavour is typically simple sweet and syrupy though there is a touch of fruit tartness. Not all that great but it’s still drinkable.

Huge raspberry aroma, dark pink/auburn, with a small pink head. Taste is the essence of raspbery, sweet and syrupy. Pretty good. Thank You Very Much Andrew!

Any first impressions?
-Prosperous whipped cream of a head sits atop the pinkish regal red, drawing tons of lacing.
-Faint raspberries pierce the sturdy foam.
-The mild balance of raspberry sweetness and tartness whispers simple refreshment.
-The expansive carbonation provides a frothy, festive mouthfeel, increasing drinkability.

What if you dig deeper?
-Some bittering hop resins nicely dry out the back of the palate.
-Wooden hops shyly accompany the meek raspberries in the nose.
-The overall flavor spectrum is too restrictive and shy for flavor-seeking tastebuds.
-All in all, this is a well-crafted, boring recipe.

Bottle; no date.

(Rating #523)
