bubbleflubber (889), Collinsville, Virginia, USA Nov 19, 2009 Pours jet-ink black into the glass, with a nice thick mocha-tan head that reduces to a cap, leaving sticky suds lacing. The nose is all about roasted bitter chocolate. Flavors of bitter chocolates, anise, roasted malt, licorice, cocoa, and some light, well-complementary bitters to finish the pull. The body is extremely smooth, with subtle carbonation that well suits. The mouthfeel is complex, yet goes down super easily. Superb stout from McAuslan! ben4321 (984), Rockville, Maryland, USA Nov 15, 2009 Location: 11.5 oz bottle from State Line, 11/13/09
Aroma: It has a strong brandy/boozy feel to it, along with that is some coffee, bitter chocolate, smoke, and roasted malts
Appearance: It pours a deep black color with a brown head that leaves a thin remnant and spotty lace through the duration
Flavor: The taste of this beer is dominated by the roasted malts and coffee with some licorice and smoke in there too
Palate: A smooth beer, though it doesn’t have that much body to it, especially for this style, its slightly thin
Overall Impression:
It says Oatmeal Stout on the bottle, but I didn’t get a lot of oats. Mostly, more of a coffee/roasted stout from what I could taste. Anyway, it was quite different from what I was expecting from the nose, but still pretty good. A nice, enjoyable, and flavorful beer, it isn’t quite as good as the reputation would have lead me to believe, but still very solid indeed.
JulienHuxley (193), Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada Nov 14, 2009 Bottle. Beautiful black ink pour with a very consistent head. Lots of roasted, chocolatey, coffee and malt aromas rise up from this one. Nice bitter roasted coffee balanced with some vanilla and malt sweetness in the taste with a creamy mouthfeel. Delicious Berley31 (185), New Brunswick, Canada Nov 13, 2009 A: Poured with a small, tan head that retained as such throughout drinking. Body is jet-black and completely opaque.
S: Nice aroma of roasted coffee beans... and some oats in there as well?
T: Lots of roasted coffee, with a long duration - this beer stays with you when you’re done drinking it. Finish is slightly bitter and dry.
M: Light-bodied with a creamy texture... not near as heavy as I was expecting. Carbonation is soft.
D: Not something I could pound back all night, but is a beer like this really meant for that type of consumption? A great oatmeal stout that is best-enjoyed sipping slowly, as all the great beers are. italarican (163), Astoria, New York, USA Nov 12, 2009 Pours a deep mocha brown with a sexy dark brown head. Great aroma of Hershey’s chocolate syrup, currants, and vanilla. Flavor is smoky with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and espresso. There’s a heavily roasted, almost burnt aftertaste. Somewhat heavy and not as silky smooth as other oatmeal stouts. Still, it’s a delicious beer. jonno (555), Brisbane, Australia Nov 7, 2009 Pours a wonderful pitch black with big fluffy tan head. Nose is amazing for a beer this low in ABV. All raisins and Coffee. In the mouth its a little thin and a bit heavy on the burnt coffee aftertaste. Well made beer but pales in comparison to the sam smith version. corby112 (700), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 30, 2009 Pours a deep dark pitch black without even the slightest trace of lighter edges and a two finger frothy dark coffee colored head with excellent retention, only slowly fading into a lasting cap that coats the glass with soapy lacing.
Sweet malty aroma with hints of bitter sweet dark chocolate, roasted coffee, licorice, alcohol, toast, dark fruit, toffee, creamy lactic notes and a heavy dose of oatmeal. There is also some very subtle hops but the aroma of this beer is all about the sweet silky chocolate malts and roasty notes.
Surprisingly thin based on the appearance. Slightly watered down with very slight chewy roasted chocolate malt. Very roasted and dry with a lot of oatmeal, toffee and hazelnut with a very faint hints of coffee bean, toffee, subtle hops and bourbon(?). There is a nice hop bitterness that lasts throughout and compliments the roasty bitter dark chocolate notes nicely. ABV is unnoticeable and this is a pretty quaffable session beer. Very complex for a beer that can be sessioned. Bone dry finish. Decent but nothing spectacular.
curly (575), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Oct 29, 2009 Pours solid black with a thick brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee, cream, and some smoke. Taste is a bitter chocolate, oat, cocoa and finishes with bitter roast. Medium thin body
