MrBunn (1520), Western, Pennsylvania, USA May 7, 2008 Bottle. Pour is thick and black with a one finger tan head. Aromas are weak... a bit musty and with some oatmeal and dark malt. Oatmeal and dark chocolate come through strong in the flavor as does a bit of a peat/smoke flavor. Very nice balance and wonderful, thick mouthfeel makes this one a winner. stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA May 6, 2008 11.5 oz bottle--bonus from jjpm74. Pours a jet black color with a tan head. Head slowly recedes to a fine film and leaves plenty of lacing. The aroma is medium in strength with coffee and smoked malts. The flavor is rich with more coffee and smoke. The mouthfeel is silky smooth and light on the palate. The finish is long with lingering smoke and biter walnuts. Overall: A superb stout, I’d drink it every day if it was available. OldMrCrow (1179), Seattle, Washington, USA May 4, 2008 Bottle courtesy of CaptainCougar. Thanks. I ’ve been wanting to try this one for a long time.
Pours very, very black and thick, elegant tan head, full but with lovely fine bubbles. This one’s a five on appearance. Rich chocolate aroma, slightly metallic, inous hints, malty. Whispers of smoke and grape on the bitter-chocolate-dominated flavor, gently, gently sour, easy drinking, hints of sweetness ducking in at unexpected moments in the flavor profile, that smoke lingering into the finish beyond any serious trace of the hops.
After dozens of great big impy stouts, it’s so refreshing to sit down with a classic like this one. Beautifully done. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA May 2, 2008 Bottle shared by mmtmatrix. Poured a full dark brown color with a moderate beige head that receded to a layer and left good lacing. Aroma of light chocolate, and some espresso-like coffee and cream. Smooth, moderately creamy entry with some light chocolate leads into a light coffee flavor with some moderate roastiness on the finish. Smooth, light on the palate. Pretty nice for a 5% stout. Thanks Malcolm. jmikolich (405), Athens, Ohio, USA Apr 29, 2008 12oz, really surprised this is rated 4, its really good make no mistake, but its not phenomenal, its a black beer which smells like chocolate, the body is thin and carbonated its super easy drinking and tastes like a foreign stout, easy to "gulp" Imperial-John (154), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada Apr 28, 2008 Updated: Sep 3, 2008Black with thick foamy espresso head that thins quickly as coats glass. Smokey roasted espresso aroma. Smokey roasted chocolate espresso flavour with a very dry after-taste. dkachur (2316), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Apr 27, 2008 Updated: Nov 27, 20084/27/08: Sampled in the presentation tent at WBF Raleigh. Dark black with a very large brown head. Strong oat aroma with banana and spice. Taste of oats, coffee, caramel. Light smokiness. Thick and chewy texture. Tongue-coating. 7/3/8/4/16/3.8
Rerate: 5/31/08... Bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville. Very dark pour with a one finger brown head, low head retention and no lacing. Sweet malty and nutty aroma with notes of oatmeal and a subtle smokiness. Taste is bitter coffee with the oats coming later. Just enough smoke to not be offensive to my rauschbier hating self. Yum. 6/3/8/4/15/3.6 KimJohansen (6676), Copenhagen V, Denmark Apr 26, 2008 Black with huge light brown head. Sweet aroma with roasted malt, caramel, coffee and chocolate notes. Flavor has good complexity and goes the same way.
