mannika (98), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 15, 2007 Draft at C’est What. Pours a beautiful black with a frothy tan head. Aroma is interesting, smells toasty, but there is also a sourish smell, almost like tequila. Taste is very refreshing, with malty flavours as well as the promised oatmeal (the best part of the brew). Aftertaste continues a bit of that metallic sourish smell unfortunately. This used to be one of my favourite beers. If it wasn’t for the sourish aroma/flavour it would have been great, I’ll have to rate it again to see if I got a bad batch. anders37 (4516), Malmö, Sweden Apr 15, 2007 Bottle. Pours a black color with an off-white head. Sweet roasted malty aroma with hints of chocolate and coffee. Sweet malty roasted coffee flavor with some hints of chocolate. Sweet roasted malty finish with a long aftertaste with lots of coffee. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Apr 11, 2007 Black body with a long-lasting medium tan head leaving great lacings. Creamy malted body delivers plenty of dark cake flavours. Not quite chocolate, just half-baked creamy dark cake dough. No roasted coffee beans flavours and very little in as far as bitter black chocolate goes. Everything about that beer is cake-ish. The malts are slightly caramelized (more than usual for a stout) and there’s also a little fruity sourness that reminds me of a fruit-cake. Full body and soft mouthfeel. Excellent although a tad overrated. One of the most popular, easiest to find and cheapest black beer in Quebec that also happens to be one of the best one. As attested by the multiple warrants issued against me, it’s not often that the general population and I agree on something. Grovlam (3790), Copenhagen, Denmark Apr 11, 2007 Bottle. Huge creamy brown head that mostly lasted. Pitch black colour. Very good lacing in glass. Aroma was grain, butter, hint of smoke, liquorish, roasted and light notes of chocolate and coffee. Amazing for a 5% with this kind of complexity in the taste. Medium bodied with a flat carbonation. Flavour was light to moderated sweet with god burned bitterness to balance this beer. Nice smooth and slightly burned bitterness in the finish. Impressive! It is not always about the alcohol, this is evident in this beer. ChrisThomson (378), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 11, 2007 One of the top Canadian brews! Pours jet black with a decent white head. Tastes are full of coffee and bitter chocolate notes and a bit of smokiness. Is velvet smooth with a soothing finish Jordiam (70), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Apr 7, 2007 When I went to buy this, the man at the counter couldn’t stop talking about this beer (how it’s "thicker than Guinness" and "It took me a bit over a week just to finish one six pack").
The pour was very interesting; it looked almost like syrup and it was pure black. It was opaque and gave a solid brown head that stayed from start to finish. The brilliance behind this beer lied behind the aroma; it was very strong notes of coffee, dark chocolate, and a bit of roasted caramel. However, the taste didn’t do as well as the aroma, it was very dry with a bit of coffee taste, and an extremely strong bitter finish (not vile though). Body is smooth and a bit thin with a "bitter" feel down the throat. This beer made me surprisingly wonky and I’m not sure why because it’s only 5%. Regardless, this is a quality crafted beer, one for special occasions. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Mar 29, 2007 Bottle smuggled illegally across the border. Super-smooth and creamy in the mouth, much like if it were on nitro. Great roastiness and a very slighty funky sourness plus a creamy, oaty nose make this an outstanding stout. Totally restrained yet still lush, very dry, and pretty much the antithesis of the typical top 50 stouts you see. wilderthanyou (409), Guelph, Ontario, Canada Mar 28, 2007 Picked this up at random and I gotta say, i’m really friggin glad I did. Pours about as black as black can get, with a thin chocolate brown head that has good retention. The aroma is dark chocolate and coffee. The flavor was very balanced, with big notes of coffee, and unsweetend chocolate, and very subtle hints of vanilla on the finish. The body was kind of thin, but that is about the only thing I can complain about. All and all a top notch stout.
