Emil (6075), Copenhagen, Denmark Aug 15, 2006 Bottle thanx to Henrikb. Black colour with a big brown head. Oat, chocolate, light roasted, coffee aroma and taste. Medium body with a very dry finish. kidcadaver (3), Canada does not count Aug 14, 2006 Great Canadian Beer, dark, bitter, clean tasting. Complex roasty and bitter finish, with hops gradually taking the upper hand human (1), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada does not count Aug 10, 2006 One of my top few beers. Nice bitter coffee and hints of chocolate flavour. And lacking a better way to phrase it at this point, it is a very clean tasting beer. Dry might be the right word to use there. JRHBrew (217), Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada Aug 8, 2006 Bottle pours black with a dark brown head that forms just after pouring and lasts. Excellent roastiness perfectly balances the subtly yet potent hops. Bittersweet chocolate and fantastic burnt coffee tastes that don’t over-power but blend in with the mellow feel of the beer make this a truly delightful drink bcbeer (10), Canada Jul 14, 2006 Pours black, with brown head. Excellent lace that diminishes slowly. Smells OK. Tastes of chocolate, molasses and charcoal. Best stout I have ever tried. lalubeer (57), Canada Jun 30, 2006 This is the well balanced beer. Nice touch of coffee and chocolate, nice creamy feeling. SubCapt (23), Switzerland Jun 30, 2006 [bottle, 341ml]
Jet black, nice long-lasting tan head. Terrific nose, torrefied notes, touch of coffee, plenty of black treacle and hops lurking at the back.
Moderate condition, well-balanced body, nice and malty, again treacle, hint of coffee, licorice too, silky, biscuity edge from the oats, hops working their way up. Complex roasty and bitter finish, with hops gradually taking the upper hand.
One to convionce people, especially ladies, that there’s more to stout tahn big-brand black water. :o) moejuck (1165), Ohio, USA Jun 23, 2006 Thanks to aabrewer for sending me this one. The St. Ambroise is one of the best looking beers I have ever seen. This is how a beer should look after being poured--huge black body topped by a huge tan head that sits up there with no intentions of going anywhere anytime soon. The head leaves tons of lacing on the glass all the way down. The aroma is sweet chocolate. The taste is more coffee-like than chocolate I think. The mouthfeel was a bit thin I thought, but it was also very creamy at the same time. Not as sweet as I had expected from reading the other reviews--but still sweeter than most stouts. A very solid stout to be sure."
