Went down as smooth as, dark body with good light tan head that lasted well and left clumps of lacing. Good aroma, malt, chocolate, coffee and toasted notes. Same again in the taste, a lIttle thin making it easy to drink. Enjoyable. Kinz (2215), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 27, 2008 This had been a Top 50 staple for a long time back in the day, very happy to finally run across a bottle. Pours black, brown at edges, very little head. Great aroma, with notes of chocolate, espresso, dark fruit, and faint liquor. Surprisingly light bodied for such a big aroma. Flavors overall matched, with a certain silky quality in addition to the roast notes thanks to the oatmeal. A very nice brew, good to have a reminder that not all stouts must be imperial. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jan 4, 2004 On Tap: Pours opaque black with an invinceable creamy light tan head. Palate is very creamy and very thick. Nose is pretty faint. Start is mildly sweet with some chocolate, finishes with some bitterness. The creaminess and palate makes this beer. willblake (2187), Belcamp, Maryland, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 19, 2004 12.19.04 12oz bottle thanks to my secret santa in Hamilton, ON. Deep and almost black beer looks thick and soft on the pour. The head is thick and sticky tan and lasts and laces all over the place. The aromas are incredible coffee and cream notes with hazelnut syrup that remind me of my morning coffee at 7-11. I love my morning coffee. The flavor is almost all coffee with coffee notes and coffee touches. There’s also some more hazelnut, truffle oil, chocolate coated coffee bean. The brew has just the right amount of bitterness, just the right amount of sweetness, creamy body...damn, this is some good stuff! Easily the best Oatmeal stout I’ve had. Thanks for sending two, Santa!! whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 3, 2004 Thanks to slikwily for helping me finally nab this long-standing fugitive on my want list. Attractive beer with a luscious, velvety tan head and black, mostly opaque body that reveals a burgundy sheen when backlit. Very intriguing spicy quality in the nose that comes closest to cloves. Also has nice prominent notes of dried plums and chocolate. Great chocolatey plum flavor with a big fruity finish that lingers. Also reminds me of chocolate-covered cherries. Gets better with each sip. This is an awesome stout. EithCubes (2167), Indiana, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Oct 17, 2007 Bottle from porterhouse - thanks, Kevin! Sweet and slightly sour roast aroma, some great funky-nutty Dunkel notes. Some dark candied fruit and an English ale yeast strain. Dry with slight bittering hops. Pitch pour with a GORGEOUS dark brown head, lacing and rocky and bubbly and spoonable. Strong smoked character with heavy roast. Predominately very dry with only the occasional flash of sweetness. Nutty with slight dark pitted fruit underneath. Burned notes from copious black malt. Touch of cocoa with lots of chocolate. Thin, watery body is usually a negative but makes this all the more sessionable. Very robust tasting but not over-the-top; manages to retain a high degree of complexity. Alcohol perfectly hidden and low enough to warrant a little binge. Light bitterness and nice and dark. Very high praise for this one: after over eighty stouts, this is one of my favorites. A very smokey aroma with dark malts, chocolate, and some hops. A similar body with a smokey finish. GonZoBeeR (2163), ste-Eulalie, Quebec, Canada
