Pours a dark deep brown/redidsh/black w/ a flu=ffy big small bubbled tan head that laces well. Smells of light coffee and bittersweet chocolate, roasted malts and a nice dose of bitterness in it. Palate is a nice coated lightly creamy one. The flavor is a bitter mocha/roasted malt flavor decent hoppiness. Overall pretty good but I wanted a bit more of something I just can’t put my finger on what’s missing. Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA

Just about opaque black in color with a light brown head, great appearance for a session stout. Aroma is chocolate, molasses, a bit of roast with some dark fruits. Taste is chocolate, dark fruits, light roast with hints of chalk. A decent amount of oatmeal sweetness in the taste which rounds out the body incredibly well. Finishes with light roast, and smooth chocolate. Great oatmeal stout. Thanks Nelson. Terminus (1955), Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA

Very nice lacing for a stout! slighlty sour flavors start but then are invaded with a dark chocolate mid palate fading into a long burnt finish. As it warmed, the aromas became less metallic and more roasty/hoppy. I think that all oatmeal stouts need to be warmed more before serving (i think that was my problem). A top 50? I dont know. One of the better oatmeal stouts on the market? definately!! fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA

Dark Dark pour with a deep brown head that was pretty good sized. Faded shortly after the first sip. Aromas of Tootsie Roll Chocolate and Coffee. More Roastiness comes through after a few sniffs. Bitter flavor up front that makes me think of burnt malts. Some coffee in the finish. With an aftertaste of roastiness. Very good beerbill (1953), Laurel, New York, USA

Aroma is coffee and burnt wood. Strong coffee flavor and also burned, not roasted malts. There is also an odd aftertaste that reminded me of tobacco. I see all of the glowing remarks for this beer, it just didn’t appeal to me all that much. MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA

Expectedly dark, but has a really lovely thick, puffy coffee-colored head. Nice nose, redolent with chocolate, a bit of woodiness. Taste has a fair amount of espresso, a bit of chocolate. Not as rich as the nose promises. Really nice, viscous palate, but could use a bit more carbonation. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA
