Intensely roasty malt accented nose that especially emphasizes the use of an extreme amount of black malt, which gives strong hints of coffee, expresso and chocolate. The powerful malt flavor is piercing and big, especially with its black malt (unsweetened coffee) flavor, chocolate, expresso and its cunning bitterness. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA

This is a good looking beer. Wow. The nose is complex and wonderful. A rush of malts overwhelm you with chocolate, coffee, bitter hops, mocha, oatmeal and raisins. Smoke shows itself both in the aroma and flavor. The chocolate and roast malts are the biggest contributor to the flavor. Coffee underlies hanging out with the bitter hops. There is hints of soy amongst it. Mocha as well. The palate is silky, full bodied and a finish of smokey chocolate and bitter coffee. Very nice beer. Thanks David! | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 29, 2006 Chalky, deep charred roast sugar and grain aroma. Bold, yet straightforward and a little strong in the unyielding roast oat presentation. Pitch black, with a super creamy soap of coffee mousse. Flavor is a heavy hand of roast, and cofee, with brown sugar trailing behind. Thinner then I expected, but probably right on for 5%. Lots of molasses and some sour salty oat quality. Not sublte or particularly quiet. Somewhat evaporative. Roast graduates to some sour and salt. Still a lot of flavor for this beer, with all the good stout things one would want. Pour was was a dark black with a nice 3 finger tan head that stayed the whole drink. Taste was great. Strong coffee taste with hints of vanilla and chocolate in the middle. Semi dry bitter aftertaste. Didn’t care much for their other beers, but this was very good. nearbeer (1834), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Aroma of very sweet coffee and char. Tastes of sweet coffee, charred wood, dry grain, and maybe a touch of sour milk. A bit much oatmeal and roast to be a really great stout. Medium-heavy body is nicely dryish, but a touch too rough with frothy bubbles. SDbruboy (1832), San Diego, California, USA

Coffee, espresso, chocolate, oatmeal, vanilla, raisins, etc. Very nicely brewed! Very dry finish with a subtle bittering hops presence in the lingering aftertaste. Sessionable! thegreenrooster (1829), St.louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 11, 2008 Pour is a black with no head. Aroma is roasted malt with some coffee and chocolate. Flavor is much of the same. The beer starts off with a sweet chocolate but after the swallow you get more of the bitter coffee. A decent beer and a pretty solid stout although I would probably not spend $9 for the 4 pack of this but picking up another single is not out of the question.
