Commercial Description:
St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout consistently beats out international stouts in blind tastings and competitions. This intensely black ale carries strong hints of espresso and chocolate. The oatmeal contributes body and ensures a long-lasting mocha-coloured head. If you like stout, you will love St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout.

12 oz. bottle from Hogtownharry, thanks dude! Pours ebony and opaque with the faintest garnet highlights, and a thin to non-existent head. Smooth, roasty malts, a bit of lactose and sweetness, light chocolate notes. Sweetish, roasty with light charcoal notes and bitter chocolate, dark coffee and milky. Full body and gentle carbonation.

341 ml bottle. Dark brown almost black body with a thin beige head. Aroma is bitter chocolate at liquorices. Flavor is malty, liquorices, bitter coffee, chocolate and a bit fruity. Yes, this is good, but it didn’t really hit me with a very high score. Don’t actually now why, maybe I need to sample this again?

Nice rich brown head but small. Settles nicely. Awesome complex aroma dominated by raisins with roasted grains, molasses and a touch of alcohol. Color is black, with hints of black and a touch of black. Flavor is quite smooth with plenty of coffee which was missing in the aroma. Flavor is not as complex as the aroma. Finish is a little bitter from the hops. A very good stout although the body was a little bit thinnner that I expected from a oatmeal stout and it is certainly lacking in the alcohol department.

Had a bit (on tap at the C’est What at the end of Fri night’s summer party festivities, but I was wiped). So now I’m at home having DougShoemaker’s gift bottle. Far and away the best Oatmeal stout I’ve ever had...perfectly balanced. I like roastiness, and this has got it. But it is also amazingly smooth, and has the most wonderful slight raisin (and other fruit?) sweetness. Ahhhh. Aroma and flavor perfectly matched...a real world classic.

Dark blackish hue. Pours with a shy creamy tan-colored head, burnt coffee beans, chocolate, roasted grain aromas follow through on a medium-bodied palate with half-sweet chocolate. coffe expresso, mocha, mellow with a dark roasted malt bitterness finish.

Bottle. Body-opaque body with a thin beige ring of bubbles. Nose=boozy, cigarette ashtray, plastic. Taste-dull cigarette smoke, malt vinegar, butter, light smoke, toffee, light coffee, light dark chocolate, high CO2, lightly medicinal on the back end. The CO2 is way too high, too acrid and butter with just a touch too much smoke. A good example of too much meets too little. I have been looking forward to this beer for a very long time, but this is a little one-sided, and unfortunalty, a total and complete disappointment.

A taste treat from Dave (pootzboy) in Canada. Thanks, Buddy! Pours a beautiful black and tan: black body with foamy tan head. Decorous lacing. The aroma is roasted malts, subtle coffee and chocolate notes. Full and rich bodied, smooth and creamy in the mouth. Just the slightest hint of carbonation. The flavor was a beautiful blend of roasted coffee and Dutch cocoa and malt. This is a stout I can live with. Would love to taste side-by-side with Dark Lord, Siberian Nights, Speedway, and Stone Imperial. Stoutie Ecstasy. Thanks again, Dave.

Bottle generously given to me by Ross on our first trade. I had been wanting that for awhile. This says best by nov 30. 2006. Uh oh! Pours deep brown black with a brown head. Strong aroma of dark chocolate and burnt malts. Nice slick mouthfeel. Initial flavor of dark roasted malt, unsweetened chocolate, dried oats, and peppery hops. Very expresso like bitter finish. Not much sweetness at all on this one. My first bottle, so I am not sure if this is past its prime or not. Good, but I would love to try a fresh one.
