I’m amazed that this is only 5% alcohol; the amount of flavor and body almost put it in the imperial range. Big, rich caramel sweetness, chocolatey and roasted malt flavors. Finishes dry, with a firm, yet smooth roasty bitterness. Full and silky body. Smells of rich chocolate mousse. Everything just works. Dixen (1465), Flagstaff, Arizona, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 21, 2005 2003 edition. Good roasty coffee aroma, some smokyness too. Jet black body with a nice tan head. Nice pleasant coffee roastiness, some sweetness. Is a bit thin in the mouthfeel but a decetn stout. dchmela (1458), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 4, 2008 11.5 oz bottle. Pours out thick and black with a thick creamy dark tan head. Cocoa, coffee, dark chocolate aroma. Coffee, chocolate taste with a coffee dry bitterness. Unique tasting stout that lacks a little of the oatmeal velvet that I like in oat stouts, but nonetheless very easy to drink and good. Jokes (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Aug 3, 2002 Updated: Jan 24, 2004This beer is thick and dark. Aroma is very pleasing with hints of roasted oats, coffee, chocolate, raison, and molasses. A rich mouthfeel is then followed by flavors that match the aroma. The finish is long and dry with some hops becoming more noticable. Brilliant. holdenn (1444), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 19, 2006 11.2 oz bottle. Pours thick and dark with a thick head that slowly fades. This beer smells exactly like a mash, raw grains, hot water and all the enzyme conversions going on. I’m not turned off by this aroma but as it lasts all the glass down, it is enjoyable. Nice creamy mouthfeel, full, with flavors that don’t seem to match. Chocolate, roast, and bitter, but for all that build up, the flavor falls off. Bitter finish the way bad diner coffee does. Hmm, maybe not the best of bottles. Not sure of the date here, but i’d like to try this fresh. robinvboyer (1443), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada

Totally opaque black with some dark ruby at clear parts of the glass. Light brown fizzy and foamy head. Grape and wine aroma with floral hops and fruity notes: apple, cherry, wood. Also sweet molasses in the aroma. The flavour begins with a gentle bitterness that yields to some fruit and then escalates to a robust molasses and roasted flavour. Peach and celery notes and a bitterness that comes from both the hops and malts. Chewy, full body with medium carbonation and a clean finish. Excellent. adrian910ss (1435), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
