| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 25, 2008 Bottle. Aroma of the corner coffee shop. I’m not a huge coffee drinker, in fact I probably drink coffee about four times a year, but this aroma just feels like a lovely, refreshing foray into a local, homely coffee establishment, and I love it. Sure there’s probably some more specific flavors in there, but in this case it’s definitely about the forest, not the trees. Flavor largely continues in this vain but also with some nice bitter chocolate/chocolate with bittering hops. Appearance almost garnered the rare 5, but the head wasn’t quite as refined as I require for a 5, dissipated a bit too fast...it’s pretty, I’d give it a 4.5, I’m just rambling to logically justify to myself my intense internal pull away from the 5. Mouthfeel solid, nothing special, nothing wanting. Great brew. mrkimchee (1414), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

absolute black with dark brown head. complex aroma of roasted coffee, raisins, figs, burnt sugar, roast, chcoclate, and oatmeal malt. silky smooth mouthfeel, full body. flavours are big but balanced, espresso, bitter chocolate, tart dried fruit and dark bread. finish perfectly balanced between roast and hop. classic. asheft (1410), Marburg, Germany

Totally opaque black with some dark ruby at clear parts of the glass. Light brown fizzy and foamy head. Grape and wine aroma with floral hops and fruity notes: apple, cherry, wood. Also sweet molasses in the aroma. The flavour begins with a gentle bitterness that yields to some fruit and then escalates to a robust molasses and roasted flavour. Peach and celery notes and a bitterness that comes from both the hops and malts. Chewy, full body with medium carbonation and a clean finish. Excellent. drowland (1410), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Aug 14, 2009 Pours a murky black with a roasty caramel colored head. The aroma is wonderfully malty and bitter with hints of coffee/espresso. The flavor is an enjoyment from beginning to end, starting with some malt, slight sour with a sweet caramelly middle, finishing roasty and bitter with coffee, dark chocolate, espresso, and malt. We can’t forget the wonderfully creamy mouthfeel! Fantastic! iwantalambic (1389), St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Lots of bitterness with little to balance. Medium bodied with a lot of bitter astrigincy. Meh. Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Apr 13, 2008 Pours to a luxurious chocolate brown hue topped with a creeping web of mocha lace. Aroma is all sturdy graham cracker crust and vanilla extract with bits of sweetened, old espresso and flavored milk. Sweet, but belying a body full of chunky, muscley malt character. Flavor doesn’t deliver on that suggestion, settling for mostly sweet milk, metallic cheap coffee, sugar, and sterile cherry fruitiness. Coffee tones tend to carry a soapy, overextracted quality. Hops tend to present vegetally and with bits of old citrus rinds. Non dairy graham crust peeks in again with a wink of odd, tangy sweetness in the mid palate. Palate is light to medium bodied; brittle, unsupported, loose. Cinnamon tinted oatmeal and some iron water in a lengthy, earthy finish full of minerals. Plenty of unlikeable qualities here, but none to any obscene degree. Fair enough. DragonStout (1380), Pataskala, Ohio, USA
