The St. Ambroise is one of the best looking beers I have ever seen. This is how a beer should look after being poured--huge black body topped by a huge tan head that sits up there with no intentions of going anywhere anytime soon. The head leaves tons of lacing on the glass all the way down. The aroma is sweet chocolate. The taste is more coffee-like than chocolate I think. The mouthfeel was a bit thin I thought, but it was also very creamy at the same time. Not as sweet as I had expected from reading the other reviews--but still sweeter than most stouts. A very solid stout to be sure."

Aroma of espresso, milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel very smooth but some light prickliness. Feels quite full but not quite chewy. Nicely formed rings of lacing. Flavor is rich espresso with hints of chocolate towards finish. Coffee flavor is strong but not overpowering. Somewhat bitter but the oatmeal and overall texture of the beer seem to dampen it. Quite damn drinkable. Goodgrief (1161), Middletown, Delaware, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 26, 2008 April 2006 - What a beautiful beer! Poured almost jet black with a little red showing around the edges with huge dark tan head. Lacing left all over the glass when done. Roasty malt aroma leapt from the glass and could be smelled during the pour. The first sip wow’ed me and got me in trouble because my wife was mid-sentence and then she said, "You’re not even listening to me...you’re looking at that stupid beer!" Oh well, you gotta do what you gotta do...and I had to appreciate the beer. eaglefan538 hit the flavor on the head...a bit bitter and lactic tasting. I really wanted it to be smoother and lose the bitterness and this could have been up there with the super-elite. As it is, it’s still probably up near tops of the class...just lost the opportunity for "a moment." IMtheOptimator (1161), Bethel, Connecticut, USA

Poured jet black with a perfect creamy tan head. Chocolate, coffee, and some light fruit comprise the aroma. Taste is bitter coffee, a touch of chocolate, a hint of cream, and a dry bitter finish. Not quite as sweet as I thought it might be. Very drinkable and smooth. Though I like my stouts a little sweeter, this is quite good. OKBeer (1159), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Black with a frothy brown head. Malty aroma with honey, caramel, chocolate, and a bit of coffee. Good balanced flavour, with a roasted, chocolate, and coffee taste. Great mouthfeel as well, soft, a bit creamy, with just enough carbonation. redlem (1155), Illinois, USA

A woody rum like aroma. Roasted taste with a carbonated feel. The alcohol seems noticable perhaps this is due to the carbonation. Lacked sweetness and creaminess and was thin. Not really a session beer which is odd for a 5% beer. Cartoonkhaki (1150), Brantford, Ontario, Canada
