Nice brown and creamy head. Lacing is phenomenal. Smell is nice with tons of chocolate flavor. Tongue is chocolate, sweet coffee, oats, wood, and some nice residual sweetness and a good balance of hops. I even notice some hints of smoke. Great stout. I want more!! MikeB (12), Canada

Un goût de café fort suivi d’une très bonne amertume.

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Dec 15, 2008 Updated: Jan 10, 2009A pitch black beer with an aroma that embodies the word "stout"; it is bright and striking, a battle between coffee and burnt chocolate with roasted barley ready on the sidelines. In every aspect this beer has an upfront and lingering sweet coffee appeal. Its taste is also characterized by a strong roasted barley presence, faint caramel, residual chocolate notes, and a trace of black licorice. The mouthfeel is fabulously creamy and chewy. An underlying bitterness seals the deal. UM02 (23), Quebec, Canada

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Dec 17, 2009 Black, medium crema head. Coffee and bitter chocolate nose. Singed flavours. Sweet and singed malts and vanilla. Just medium bodied - it’s pretty light for the style, particularly considering the oats. Dry finish. This is not a particularly complex beer: it just has a few things that work together very harmoniously. Neither (for a stout) is it an attention-grabber - more of an intimate caress. Great. SamGamgee (1465), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jul 15, 2008 12oz bottle. Near solid black with a lasting frothy tan head. I’m amazed that this is only 5% alcohol; the amount of flavor and body almost put it in the imperial range. Big, rich caramel sweetness, chocolatey and roasted malt flavors. Finishes dry, with a firm, yet smooth roasty bitterness. Full and silky body. Smells of rich chocolate mousse. Everything just works. Listigovers (101), Ontario, Canada
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 27, 2009 Updated: Oct 2, 2009One of the smoothest pints I’ve ever tried, both on tap and in a bottle. On tap it is like the finest silk is flowing down your throat. On your tongue it is creamy and full of great malty flavours. Coffee, roasted malt, and chocolate, they are all here! And in a nice delicate manner.
In addition, the deeply layered and complex aftertaste can be savoured for ages. If you just sit there and think about it, you realize you’re drinking a world-class stout. Travlr (771), Washington, Washington DC, USA

Aroma of cocoa powder and burnt coffee beans.
Tastes of bitter chocolate and caramel, not much of a finish, which was the only thing preventing a 4.5 taste rating.
Positively chewy, excellent body.
Classic example of the style, well worth seeking out.
