The nose is full of intense roastiness with buttery notes, ink, plums, cardboard, and chocolate. Silky, oily in feel with some sharp spritz. A myriad of flavors from beginning to end: intense coffee middle increases to the finish, alongside coconut, raisin, and flaky roasted barley. The finish shows a sufficient amount of oatmeal goodness, which I always seek in the style but never find, with a complex mix of mocha, caramel, lactose, and drying hints of charcoal dryness. Runs neck and neck with El Toro and Samuel Smith’s. A real beauty. legion242 (1586), Richardson, Texas, USA

Incredible aroma of chocolate, toffee, coffee and maybe a little licorice? Pours black with a thick brown head. Flavors similar to that noticed in aroma, with a nice hop finish. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Just about perfect on the palate. Similar to the Wild Goose Oatmeal Stout I recently tried, but hoppier and not quite as sweet. This is becoming one of my favorite styles. Thanks to DougShoemaker for working out the trade with me on this one. crind (8), Finland does not count | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 20, 2002 Outstanding beer! Very dark, nice chocolate head. Great roasted taste with some hints of chocolate and coffee. Thanks for DougShoemaker for this one! JoeM500 (1876), Chicago (little italy), Illinois, USA

Nearly perfect nose, especially as it warmed. Hints of all of my favorite stouts, including some coffee-brewed and cream stouts, but nothing was dominating in the nose or taste. So smooth and rich with a perfect dry (but not too hoppy) end. aracauna (2391), Georgia, USA

The aroma is big and bold with a slight lactic quality and a suggestion of tartness. The flavor is nicely roasty but balanced by the softer dark malts. Comes across like chocolate charcoal. Despite a slight harshness, the overall effect is a very soft beer. Oily on the tongue. caledonian (367), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
