St Arnou Pilsner

Bottle (330ml). Poured golden yellow with an average sized, rocky, white head which was average lasting. Aroma was of grainy malts with strong notes of cooked sweet corn, steel, some lemon citrus and a hint of mandarin. Flavor was of sweet cornish malts with no bitterness, light notes of wet cardboard, honey and a rusty/metallic finish. Light bodied with lively carbonation, a dry mouthfeel, watery texture and a short finish.

Tasted 07/09/2008. Schooner off tap at Brisbane International Airport. Cloudy yellow gold. Sulphur and tropical hops on the nose. Malt and big NZ hop flavour struggle to get through the tart sourness that shadows everything about this beer. Problematic.

Pours with a light straw colour with thin head. Skunky/citrus aromatics as expected. Flavour is spot on, light malt and some fruit notes going through to the spicy/grassy bitterness of the saaz hops. Does it very well with no wet cardboard.

330ml bottle, served chilled. Pours a clean golden body with fluffy white head. Almost instantly bombarded by sharp, spicy, acidic Saaz hop aromatics, almost grapefruit like, some malty cereal in the background. Lean body, moderately carbonated, goes down well. Quite a good hop presence on the body, sharp lemon, fresh grass and pepper, some sugary cereal in the background, finishing dry, bitter with all-round thirst quenching appeal. Enjoyable pils.

Bottle: Nice clear golden with a sliver of a head. The aroma is classic slightly skunked pale lager - quite different from its draught brothers and sisters. Nonetheless, there’s a very pleasant burst of grassy and slightly citric notes. In the mouth an up front slightly buttery grain presence begins what moves into a briefly grassy then fliting citric presence before settling for a non-descript malt bitterness. Good quality, but really nothing special and with no distinctive character.
