Where does the tobacco scent come from? Flavor was much like the regular with a vineous raisin-like explosion of red fruit. But that tobacco aroma...WOW! Does anyone else get this? Smooth and creamy mouth feel. Chocolate and vanilla, hints of coffee with brown sugar and cream. Despite being so smooth and sweet there’s a great hop presence, it adds a big spiciness. tupalev (2617), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 7, 2007 Bottle (750ml) shared at ’Biegaman’s Summer Gathering’- my bottle thanks to Hogtown Harry. Dark brown, big fluffy white head. Mild aroma - musty malt and alcohol. Nice taste - dusty malt goodness, spicy and yeasty. Complex sipping stuff here. It would be neat to try it with the regular 12, as I remember being more blown away by the original. But hey, this was a damn nice beer shared with good company, no complaints. hellomynameis (794), Mayer, Minnesota, USA

This one poured into my snifter with a head that never diminished. Poured a chestnut brown with a head that just never went down like a virgin at a Saturday matinee. Aroma was caramel, brown sugar, dark fruit, yeast and spice. Flavor was similar with no noticable alcohol, impressive for 11%. A very classsic Belgian with all the right touches. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 3, 2007 Appearance: Dark, dark brown body with an expansive off-white head.
Smell: The nose is richly malty, reminiscent of a plate of spritzgebäck cookies along with plenty of fruits contained within: raisins, spiced pears, and bananas.
Taste: Dark caramel sweetness with some milk chocolate and cookie dough as well as the fruits carrying over from the aroma. Some alcohol and spice is present in the yeasty, semi-sweet finish. Though light, the hops really do help to taper the sweetness somewhat.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Moderate carbonation. Chewy mouthfeel.
Drinkability: I didn’t go into this beer thinking I’d proclaim it far better than the original.
And yet, here we are. When something is so very right, it just needs to be broadcast to a bunch of guys on a beer rating website:
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 "Special Edition" far exceeds its predecessor.
