Bottle. [#500 BIG thanks to Sk8viking for sharing this one] As one of my first real experiences with well brewed beer, St. Bernardus Abt 12 was an eye opener for me. Therefore it was an extra special treat for me to be able to sample this. Expectations were high. Gloomy dark color. Initial sniff showed clear signs of a way more hoppy aroma, compared to the standard Abt 12. Still some of the classic notes are present: heavy malty, molasses, caramel, banana, honey, brown sugar, raisins, and plums. Very full bodied with a hints of an alcoholic texture. Flavor was moderated sweet with some hoppy notes. This is still an excellent beer in my book, but clearly not as good as the original Abt 12.

750ml, got this for the regular st. B 12 price! aged 7months. pours a reddish brown with huge fully white head. nose has loads of sweet raisins, plums, toffee and maple syrup, some alcohol, and some leathery peppery hops that i don’t recall the regular edition having. wow, flavor is pretty boozy, the usual loaded with raisins, plums, maple syrup st. b12 with a bigger alcohol kick and leathery hops. this is tasty but too much alcohol makes this not as good as the regular st. b12.

Bottle: Deep brown, copper hues, large pillowy off-white head, sticky lacing.   Sweet bready nose, dark pitted fruit, slight brown sugar.   Strong dark pitted fruit to start, figs, dates, and a touch of molasses.   Very bready.   Dark pitted fruit, figs and dates, with a soft apple skin background.   Clean, yet big, strong bready flavors as well as dark pitted fruit.   The 11% ABV is amazingly well hidden.   Very warming but not alcoholic.   Full bodied, moderate to full mouthfeel.   Big bready finish, dark pitted fruit, semi-sweet.   Clean on the exit.   Good stuff, well balanced, and certainly very dangerous to finish by one person.

Bottle sample shared with HogtownHarry and Milos, Harry’s bottle. This one is a neat blend of the original st berny abt 12, with an interesting american take on the style, which is mostly noticable in the flavour. It pours a deep mahogony/deep brown with a large frothy beige cap, lots of brusells lace. Dark fruit aromas (plum, cherry, fig) with a strong blast of challenger and spices, with some vanilla and rye bread. The flavours are similar in the dark fruit component, and there’s a great sipcy floral contingent, but the american hopping doesn’t work with these belgian flavours. It creates an almost metallic hop flavour that clashes with the fruit. Still tasty, but not as good as it could be. FInishes with longevity, spicy, tight. Thanks for sharing this treat Harry!

Sampled at monks cafe with Dennis Bell . Brown Pour with off white head. Bready hoppy aroma with hints of belgian spices and citrus. Fruity flavors with bitter hop finish. A well crafted brew.
