sayravai (3043), Helsinki, Finland Oct 6, 2007 (Bottled, 0.75l) Murky dark brown with a medium, creamy and tanned head. Very nutty-malty, rye-puddingy aroma with yeast and some alcohol. Rye-puddingy, nutty and anise-spicy, very malty flavor matches the aroma well. Alcohol is actually quite well hidden considering the high ABV. Quite full-bodied, smooth and creamy palate with a bit foamy carbonation. I liked this better than the regular version. It has more body and maltiness, while feeling less alcoholic despite the higher ABV. Not that complex, but nice - and even nicer and smoother as it warms up.
oh6gdx (5857), Vaasa, Finland Aug 24, 2008 Bottled (thanks drewbeerme!). Amber colour with particles floating around. Mediumsized beige head. Aroma is grass, parfume, some caramel, alcohol, earth and spices. Flavour is caramel, toffee and grass with some mild fruityness. Quite different from the normal Abt 12, and sadly not as good as the normal either. Dark Red Pour, Lasting frothy head lacing is incredible. Tart, yeasty, spicy aromas, light fruits, refreshing. Taste is incredibly complex, Raisins, Sweet Dates, Maltier than the regular version. Alcohol presence is also more noticeable. Exceptional brew. craftycarl21 (184), South Hero, Vermont, USA Aug 21, 2008 Consumed on St. Bernard’s Day according to ecclesiastical calendar. Pours a murky dark brown with reddish tints. Aroma is spicy with brown sugar, molasses, and some yeast. Flavor is absolutely phenomenal- Lots of dark fruit and sweetness, with lots of spicy yeast. Somewhat prickly mouthfeel from the 11%, but oh so delicious. Absolutely incredible. oteyj (322), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Aug 21, 2008 Quaffed on St. Bernards day- the famous abbot. Pours murky brown with one finger white head. Aroma is molasses, brown sugar, with some citrus, spicy clove yeast, and coriander. Lots of sweetness and yeast character. Flavor is outstandingly sweet and complex. Tons of brown sugar and dark fruity sweetness. Alcohol bite evident, but not in the way of any flavors. Yeast character is quite nice- clove and allspice. Palate is a little over carbonated, but still smooth and full. Outstanding. Hophead22 (146), Redlands, California, USA Aug 19, 2008 750ml. bottle. poured a nice red/ brown, very fluffy light tan/white head. Nice aroma of dark malts, dark fruitiness as well. Very rich tasting, fruity/citrus flavor with an alcohol warming as it goes down, very good.
